The Solar Revolution Party - 30 Years On! | 26 Blandford Ave
Jun 20, 2025 (UTC+1)
Oxford
The Solar Revolution really began in Britain around 1995 when the Oxford Ecohouse was the focus of international attention with its integrated solar roof combining photovoltaics, solar hot water and passive solar systems. They were designed to provide 100% of the electricity for the low energy house and also charge a Kewet El-Jet electric car. This ordinary, but pioneering home was the first UK grid-connected PV system and it caught the imagination of generation. It was used as a teaching tool for architects, engineers, decision makers and the general public alike. The result of inputs from many different experts and sponsors who contributed to it – working to solve the challenges of the novel systems involved. Many of its lessons were recorded in the popular "Ecohouse Design Guide" that sold tens of thousands of copies in four editions in five different languages. Join us in a joyous celebration to meet some of those solar pioneers and many others who have bought and built the solar systems that 30 years on that have done nothing less than create the solar revolution with which Humanity's clean energy transformation is being built. From one house to two million solar buildings today in Britain - we deserve a really good party - join us at it!

Helen Lewis THE GENIUS MYTH with Judith Buchanan | Blackwell's Bookshop
Jun 26, 2025 (UTC+1)
Oxford
The Genius Myth
The tortured poet. The rebellious scientist. The monstrous artist. The tech disruptor.
You can tell what a society values by who it labels as a genius. You can also tell who it excludes, who it enables, and what it is prepared to
tolerate
.
Taking us from the Renaissance Florence of Leonardo da Vinci to the Floridian rocket launches of Elon Musk's SpaceX, Helen Lewis unravels a word that we all use - without really questioning what it means.
Along the way, she uncovers the secret of the Beatles' success, asks how biographers should solve the Austen Problem, and reveals why Stephen Hawking thought IQ tests were for losers (before taking one herself). And she asks if the modern idea of genius - a class of special people - is distorting our view of the world.
Helen Lewis
Helen Lewis is a British journalist who works as a Staff Writer at the Atlantic Magazine. She is a regular on the Private Eye podcast, Page 94, and is the co-host of
Strong Message Here
with Armando Iannucci on BBC Radio 4.
Her history of Feminism, 'Difficult Women' was a Sunday Times bestseller.

Absolutely fantastic, one of the best sessions I have ever been to on teaching. Hugely practical and really engaging.
Sue is a great speaker and I learnt so much! I have learnt more in this session than during my PGCE. Really great.
Some excellent practical takeaways and frameworks for thinking about how to approach various issues.
Genuinely an incredibly useful CPD session; comfortably the best I have attended.

Alice's Day 2025 | Blackwell's Bookshop
Jul 5, 2025 (UTC+1)
Oxford
Alice's Day
Alice’s Day 2025, the annual city-wide celebration of all things Alice in Wonderland, is on Saturday 5th July.
It is celebrated annually on the first Saturday in July, in commemoration of the afternoon on the 4th July 1862 when the Christ Church mathematician Charles Dodgson took the Dean of Christ Church’s daughters (Lorina, Alice, and Edith Liddell) on a boat trip, from Folly Bridge to Godstow, where they had a picnic.
There, they begged him to tell her a story, so he invented tales of a girl called Alice who had fantastical adventures. He wrote this up for her in a fine manuscript entitled
Alice’s Adventures Under Ground
in 1864 and published an expanded version as
Alice in Wonderland
in 1865, under the pen name Lewis Carroll, with illustrations by John Tenniel.
Shop Activities

The Five Sacred Guardians | Online and in person at Littlemore Village Hall
Jul 12, 2025 (UTC+1)
Oxford
Saturday 12th July 2025 10.00am - 5.00pm UK time, in person and online
Mimi Kuo Deemer will lead this day of qigong and meditation exploring the Five Sacred Guardians. Mimi says "In Chinese mythology and qigong, there are Five Sacred Guardians of Earth and the Four Cardinal Directions. These are the Green Dragon of the East, Red Phoenix of the South, Yellow Snake of the Earth White Tiger of the West and Black Turtle of the North. Each of these animals guard the movements of cosmic and universal energy, and point us towards the possibilities of harmony with the cyclical patterns of creation and dissolution. Present since ancient times in Chinese Daoist texts, these later also became guardians of Buddhist dharma.
We will explore qigong practices associated with each of these celestial guardians, and learn how an embodiment of these forms can help us cultivate and guard qualities to awaken and liberate our hearts: discernment, compassion, transformation, courage, and protection from negative forces. Through talks and experiential practices, you will learn about the importance of these guardians, qigong forms associated with them, and meditations to help anchor their wisdom into clear, contemplative awareness."
The day is suitable for beginners as well as those with experience of qigong or meditation practice. Options will be given for those who wish to do the practices seated. For those with injuries, suggestions will also be offered on how to best work safely and mindfully. The day will mainly be in silence. There will be a break for lunch of about 1hr.
Mimi Kuo-Deemer

Frank Close DESTROYER OF WORLDS | Blackwell's Bookshop
Jul 16, 2025 (UTC+1)
Oxford
Destroyer of Worlds
Was Marie Curie really the greatest female physicist of the early 20th century? Could the atomic energy contained in a gramme of radium really drive a ship across the Atlantic? Did a traffic light near the Royal Institution really give Leo Szilard his idea of the chain reaction? And was Oppenheimer really the “father of the atomic bomb”? This talk reveals how Henry Becquerel’s accidental discovery, in 1896, of a faint smudge on a photographic plate sparked a chain of discoveries which would unleash the atomic age and reveals some of the myths that have grown around this saga.Based on Frank Close’s new book,
Destroyer of Worlds,
the talk is the story of how pursuit of this hidden nuclear power source, which began innocently and collaboratively, was overwhelmed by the politics of the 1930s, and following devastation of Hiroshima and Nagasaki opened the way to a still more terrible possibility: a thermonuclear bomb, the so-called “backyard weapon”, that could destroy all life on earth – from anywhere.
The world's first
nuclear explosion
occurred on July 16, 1945, when a plutonium implosion device was tested at a site located 210 miles south of
Los Alamos
, New Mexico, on the plains of the Alamogordo Bombing Range, known as the Jornada del Muerto.
Frank Close
Frank Close is Emeritus Professor of Theoretical Physics at the University of Oxford. He was one time head of theory at Rutherford Appleton Laboratory and head of communications and public education at CERN. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society and winner of their Michael Faraday Prize for excellence in science communication in 2013. He is the only professional scientist to have won the Association of British Science Writers Prize on 3 occasions.

Oxford
Men in Love
There wasn’t an album they wouldn’t buy, or a drug they wouldn’t try.
Then it spiralled out of control . . .
They were left with nothing.
Nothing but the eternal quest of all men: the search for love.
Opening in the late 1980s as rave culture is born and moving into the 1990s, Men In Love reunites the Trainspotting crew for a riotous new journey.
Renton, Spud, Sick Boy and Begbie leave heroin behind and seek joy, and the hope of redemption, on the dance floor. Each wants to feel alive in the closing years of Thatcher’s Britain, and they fill their days with sex and romance and trying to get ahead. Taking in Edinburgh, London, Amsterdam and Paris, the group charges towards an unexpected event: Sick Boy’s wedding day.
But is falling in love the answer, or just another doomed quest?

Oxford Insight Meditation Day Retreat with Mark Ovland | Online and in person at Littlemore Village Hall
Sep 27, 2025 (UTC+1)
Oxford
Saturday 27th September 2025 10.00am - 5.00pm UK time, in person and online
Mark Ovland will lead this day of dharma teachings and practice. Mark's theme is
Tuning into Gladness.
“Whatever a person frequently thinks and ponders upon, that will become the inclination of their mind.” ~ the Buddha
Mark says "Most of us are pretty adept at dwelling on what is painful or difficult. If there's anything challenging in our experience, that’s generally where the mind will go, and often where it becomes stuck. It can feel as though we don’t have any choice in that. But attending to what is good in our experience, what is beautiful, what is pleasant, is a skill that we can learn, and it’s a skill that will serve us well in life, and on the path.
On this retreat we will explore this idea more fully, as we practise tuning our antennae towards that which uplifts the heart and mind. Leaning our attention into gladness doesn’t mean dismissing or ignoring any difficulties that may be present, but instead can resource us, allowing us to relate to our experience in new and helpful ways."
This retreat is suitable for all levels of experience. During the day we will practise in both stillness and movement postures, and there will be meditation instructions, reflections, and opportunities for questions. Outside of these times we will share the space in companionable silence. There will be a lunch break of about 1 hour. We ask that you commit to staying for the full day.
Mark Ovland
began practising meditation in 2008 and spent the following four years living and working in retreat centres and monasteries around the UK and Asia. Motivated to make these precious teachings more widely accessible and available, in 2013 he co-founded Freely Given Retreats and soon afterwards pioneered taking mindfulness courses into UK prisons. In more recent years Mark has been especially engaged with environmental and social justice issues. He was a close student of the late Rob Burbea.
