Skills development objectives:
Aim
To develop and enhance participants’ skills in training other people in critical appraisal skills to support evidence-based practice and value in healthcare.
Objectives
To extend participants’ critical appraisal skills into the role of facilitator-trainer, among other activities covering core concepts to communicate, the preparation of crib sheets, and scenario writing in the context of two of the main study types – randomised controlled trial and systematic review
To practice presenting core concepts of critical appraisal skills training relating to randomised controlled trials and systematic reviews
To observe and participate in different ways of giving feedback
To explore the challenges experienced when interpreting quantitative research results, including using measures of effect size from published research and taking account of study limitations
To review key aspects of communicating research results to different stakeholders who will use that information in decision-making
To explore and experience some of the ways in which CASP uses to develop critical appraisal skills
To have an opportunity to plan and pitch ideas for delivering critical appraisal skills to colleagues
To sharpen training and teaching skills in a safe environment
To work and train with other professionals from a range of organisations whose aim is to improve critical appraisal skills within their professional networks
Who is this course for?
This course is for people working in the healthcare sector who wish to train other professionals or students in critical appraisal skills.
If you are a beginner or unconfident at critical appraisal then you will need to have completed CASP’s online modules to give yourself a good grounding in critical appraisal skills. During this course you will
not
be trained in the basics of doing a critical appraisal but will be given the skills to increase your confidence when training others. The course will focus on improving skills to train others when appraising systematic reviews and randomised controlled trials (RCTs).
You will be provided with skills and resources to take back to your area of work and organisation.
How will this course be run?:
The course will include a mix of preparatory reading, presentations, briefings, small group work and time to practice teaching to the whole group. Numbers will be kept low for optimum interaction between trainer and participants. Our courses are also a good opportunity to network and learn from others attending, involved in disseminating healthcare information, including participants & trainers and facilitators.
What is included?:
The cost includes all workshop materials and certification, and includes daily refreshments at the venue with 3 course hot or cold buffet lunch served in the shared dining room.
Transport and accommodation are not included, and will have to be arranged by you. We are happy to help if you need advice on where best to stay, local transport etc, just give us an email.

Arthur Kay
is an entrepreneur, urban designer, and advisor building solutions for sustainable cities. He is the founder of Skyroom; The Key Worker Homes Fund; and Bio-bean.
Arthur is an Honorary Associate Professor at UCL. He is a Board Member of the Museum of the Home; and Fast Forward 2030. He is co-author of the forthcoming book Roadkill: Unveiling the True Cost of Our Toxic Relationship with Cars (Wiley, 2025).
