Hannah Bourne-Taylor 'Nature Needs You' | Blackwell's Bookshop
May 6, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Oxford
Nature Needs You - The Fight To Save Our Swifts
Nature Needs You tells the compelling story of how Hannah, without campaigning experience, funding or contacts, set out to save swifts from extinction in the UK. Her mission is to change the law and make 'swift bricks' mandatory so that the birds who nest in our walls will have a future in Britain. Nature Needs You delves into the highs and lows of trying to win hearts and minds, grab the news agenda with her naked Feather Speech, win Caroline Lucas and Lord Zac Goldsmith's support, navigate meetings with Secretaries of State and debates in the Houses of Parliament, survive the trolling and midnight self-doubt and raise a petition with the requisite 100,000 signatures for a Parliamentary debate. At stake, with a decline in numbers of over 60% since 1995, are the birds who have become our symbol of summer, the swifts screaming in the skies above us. Steeped in love for the wild, by a talented writer, Nature Needs You is a clarion call to save the nature on our doorsteps and prove that passion can be a superpower in bringing change to nature-depleted Britain. Raw, funny, self-deprecating and unstoppable in turn, this is nature writing with the pace of a thriller. Hannah is now knocking at the door of the new Labour Secretary of State for Housing, in the hope that, where Rishi Sunak and Michael Gove failed, Angela Rayner and Matthew Pennycook will save our swifts.
Hannah Bourne-Taylor
Hannah Bourne-Taylor is a nature author and conservationist on a mission to engage everyone with birds and the wonders of the natural world through her writing.

Title:
Formalizing the Future: Lean’s Impact on Mathematics, Programming, and AI
Abstract:
How can mathematicians, software developers, and AI systems work together with complete confidence in each other’s contributions? The open-source Lean proof assistant and programming language provides an answer, offering a rigorous framework where proofs and programs are machine-checkable, shared, and extended by a broad community of collaborators. By removing the traditional reliance on trust-based verification and manual oversight, Lean not only accelerates research and development but also redefines how we collaborate.
In this talk, I will highlight how Lean is being used to tackle challenging problems in mathematics, software verification, and AI research that depends on formally sound reasoning. I will also introduce the Lean Focused Research Organization (FRO), a non-profit dedicated to expanding Lean’s capabilities and community. By showcasing real-world examples, ranging from advanced research projects to industry-driven applications, I illustrate how Lean empowers us to innovate in a more reliable, transparent, and truly collective manner.

Kevin Buzzard:
Kevin Buzzard got his PhD from Cambridge in 1995, for work on the mathematics behind Fermat's Last Theorem. After some time in Princeton and Berkeley he settled in Imperial College London, where he has been a professor of pure mathematics for 20 years. In 2017 he switched his research area to mathematical formalization and has since spent a lot of time introducing mathematicians to new technologies such as the Lean theorem prover. He gave a plenary lecture at the International Congress of Mathematicians in 2022.
Title:
Will computers prove theorems?
Abstract:
Will computers one day replace human mathematicians? Is this just around the corner, or decades away? Can neural networks spot patterns which humans have missed? Currently language models are great for brainstorming big ideas but are very poor when it comes to details. Can integrating a language model with a theorem prover like Lean solve these problems? Is the modern mathematical literature riddled with errors, and is it feasible to hope that a machine might find and even fix them? Is it possible to teach a computer the proof of Fermat's Last Theorem? And what do mathematicians make of all this? I'll talk about how modern developments in AI and theorem provers are beginning to affect mathematics.

Dan Hicks EVERY MONUMENT WILL FALL Panel Discussion | Blackwell's Bookshop
May 7, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Oxford
Every Monument Will Fall
Tracing the origins of contemporary conflicts over art, heritage, memory, and colonialism,
Every Monument Will Fall
joins the dots between the building of statues, the founding of academic disciplines like archaeology and anthropology, and the warehousing of stolen art and human skulls in museums — including the one in which he is a curator.
Part history, part biography, part excavation, the story runs from the Yorkshire wolds to the Crimean War, from southern Ireland to the frontline of the American Civil War, from the City of London to the University of Oxford — revealing enduring legacies of militarism, slavery, racism and white supremacy hardwired into the heart of our cultural institutions.
Every Monument Will Fall
offers an urgent reappraisal of how we think about culture, and how to find hope, remembrance and reconciliation in the fragments of an unfinished violent past. Refusing to choose between pulling down every statue, or living in a past that we can never change, the book makes the case for allowing monuments of all kinds to fall once in a while, even those that are hard to see as monuments, rebuilding a memory culture that is in step with our times.
Dan Hicks
Dan Hicks is Curator and Professor of Contemporary Archaeology at the University of Oxford. His new book Every Monument Will Fall has been called by Professor Paul Gilroy as "an extraordinary intervention — this bold, provocative book is an indispensable resource"
Panellists :
Nandini Chatterjee
(Professor of Indian History at Oxford University)
Simukai Chigudu
(Associate Professor of African Politics at Oxford University)
Christopher Morton
(Deputy Director and Head of Curatorial, Research and Teaching at the Pitt Rivers Museum)
Corinne Fowler
(Professor of Colonialism and Heritage in the School of Museum Studies at the University of Leicester)
The event will be chaired by :
John Schofield
(Professor of Archaeology and Director Of Studies in Cultural Heritage Management at the University of York. He was formerly an Inspector and Head of Military Programmes at English Heritage. His most recent book is “Wicked Problems for Archaeologists: Heritage as Transformative Practice”)

How to Expect the Unexpected with Professor Kit Yates | Mathematical Institute, University of Oxford
May 11, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Oxford
Professor Kit Yates will explore themes from his book
How to Expect the Unexpected
, examining the challenges of prediction in an uncertain world. He will discuss how human intuition struggles with forecasting due to cognitive biases, particularly our tendency to assume linearity in situations where exponential growth or feedback loops are at play. This misperception can lead to critical errors, such as underestimating the rapid spread of disease or failing to appreciate the urgency of the climate crisis.
Kit will emphasise the necessity of embracing uncertainty rather than resisting it. He will explore how probabilistic thinking, allows us to refine our expectations as new evidence emerges. Acknowledging randomness and non-linearity, can help individuals make better decisions. By recognising the limits of predictability and cultivating a mindset that balances scepticism with flexibility, the talk will provide audiences with practical tools to navigate an unpredictable world more effectively.
Professor Kit Yates is an author, broadcaster, and academic specialising in the role of mathematics in everyday life. He completed his PhD at the University of Oxford and is now Professor of Mathematical Biology and Public Engagement at the University of Bath, where he also directs the Centre for Mathematical Biology. His interdisciplinary research applies mathematical modelling to fields including biology, epidemiology, and public health, with his work cited in policy documents worldwide.
He is the author of
The Maths of Life and Death
—a
Sunday Times
Science Book of the Year—and
How to Expect the Unexpected
, with his books published in over 25 languages. His writing regularly appears in
The Guardian
,
The Independent
, and other major outlets, where he explores the impact of mathematics on society. His articles on
The Conversation
have attracted over 6.8 million reads, and his online videos explaining mathematical and scientific concepts have reached audiences in the millions.
A trusted expert on science communication, Kit frequently contributes to BBC Radio 4’s
More or Less
and
Inside Science
, as well as TV news and documentaries. His engaging and accessible explanations have made him a sought-after speaker, appearing at major science festivals and public events. As a core member of Independent SAGE, he played a key role in providing clear, data-driven insights during the pandemic, influencing policymakers and engaging the public in discussions on mathematical modelling and public health.

Mythica: Emily Hauser in conversation with Elodie Harper - Oxford | Waterstones
May 12, 2025 (UTC+0)ENDED
Oxford
Did you ever wonder who the real women behind the myths of the Trojan War were? Now award-winning classicist and historian Emily Hauser takes readers on an epic journey to uncover the astonishing true story of the real women behind ancient Greece’s greatest legends – and the real heroes of those ancient epics, Homer's Iliad and Odyssey.Because, contrary to perceptions built up over three millennia, ancient history is not all about men – and it's not only men's stories that deserve to be told . . .In Mythica Emily Hauser tells, for the first time, the extraordinary stories of the real women behind some of the western world’s greatest legends. Following in their footsteps, digging into the history behind Homer’s epic poems, piecing together evidence from the original texts, recent astonishing archaeological finds and the latest DNA studies, she reveals who these women – queens, mothers, warriors, slaves – were, how they lived, and how history has (or has not – until now) remembered them.A riveting new history of the Bronze Age Aegean and a journey through Homer’s epics charted entirely by women – from Helen of Troy, Briseis, Cassandra and Aphrodite to Circe, Athena, Hera, Calypso and Penelope – Mythica is a ground-breaking reassessment of the reality behind the often-mythologized women of Greece’s greatest epics, and of the ancient world itself as we learn ever more about it.
Dr Emily Hauser is an award-winning classicist and ancient historian and the author of an acclaimed trilogy of novels retelling the sroties of women of Greek myth, For the Most Beautiful, For the Winner and For the Immortal. She read Classics at Cambridge, where she received a double first with distinction and won the Chancellor's Medal for Classical Proficiency. She has a PhD in Classics from Yale, and was a Junior Fellow at the Harvard Society of Fellows. She is now a Senior Lecturer in Classics and Ancient History at the University of Exeter, and teaches and researches on Homer and women's writing, ancient and modern. Elodie Harper is a journalist and author whose bestselling Wolf Den trilogy has won wide acclaim. The first book The Wolf Den, won the Glass Bell Award and was shortlisted for Page turner of the year at the British Book Awards. The second in the series, The House with the Golden Door, was a Sunday Times top 10 bestseller. The Wolf Den trilogy has sold into 20 territories worldwide and has been optioned for TV. The third and final instalment, The Temple of Fortuna, will be published in the UK and the US in November 2023. Elodie is currently a reporter at ITV News Anglia, and before that worked as a producer at Channel 4 News.

Alice Vincent HARK: HOW WOMEN LISTEN with Nell Frizzell | Blackwell's Bookshop
May 13, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Oxford
Hark
We're told women are good at listening, but we rarely examine what they're listening to, what their worlds sound like, or how it feels to be expected to listen in a world of noise made by men.
Like so many of us, Alice Vincent had become overwhelmed by the sensory overload punctuating our every moment. And then, a baby's heartbeat arrived. A rapid, pulsing whoosh of white noise. An undeniable rhythm. Once again, Alice's life became cacophonous - both with a new child, but also with the societal pressures that motherhood holds.
What followed was a personal quest to rediscover sound as something alive and vital and restorative. Beyond music, Alice's journey takes her into new corners of listening: from the phantom crying heard by mothers across the world to the nightingale's song and the crackle of the
Aurora Borealis
. As our attention spans shrink and our sense of disconnection grows, Alice wants to find out if sound - seeking it, trying to hold on to it, making space for it in her life - can reconnect her not only to lost parts of herself but to a life more consciously lived.
Hark
is a book for women who feel unheard and a means of listening more deeply in a world that has grown too loud.
Alice Vincent
Alice Vincent is a writer, broadcaster and multi-platform storyteller fascinated by the often-overlooked parts of life. Her books include the bestselling
Why Women Grow: Stories of Soil, Sisterhood and Survival

This isn’t an image of the future. Sex robots, chatbots and the metaverse are here and spreading fast. A new wave of AI-powered technologies, with misogyny baked into their design, is putting women everywhere in danger.
In
The New Age of Sexism
, Sunday Times bestselling author and campaigner Laura Bates takes the reader deep into the heart of this strange new world. She travels to cyber brothels and visits schools gripped by an epidemic of online sexual abuse, showing how every aspect of our lives – from education to work, sex to entertainment – is being infiltrated by ever-evolving technologies that are changing the way we live and love forever. This rising tide, despite all its potential for good, is a wild west where women’s rights and safety are being sacrificed at the altar of profitability.
Gripping and eye-opening,
The New Age of Sexism
exposes a phenomenon we can’t afford to ignore any longer. Our future is on the line. We need to act now, before it is too late.

The Oxford Battery Metals Lectures 2025 | Oxford University Museum of Natural History
May 15, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Oxford
SFA (Oxford) is delighted to announce that the Oxford Battery Metals Lectures will be held on Thursday 15th May, 10h00 to 17h00 BST.
In the increasingly uncertain battery metals markets, we are witnessing an “industrial continental drift” as nations reassess their reliance on global supply networks. It is forcing the EV industry to geo-insure the resilience of their supply chains to ensure long-term survival. The Oxford Battery Metals Lectures will focus this year on The Deglobalisation of Battery Supply Chains, and the implications for players across the battery metals value chain.
In the context of a rapidly-evolving market, with the recent announcement of Northvolt's bankruptcy, low commodity price cycles, and the increasing dominance of China's market share, the hands-on industry-leading experts will be addressing the critical questions, such as:
How can battery supply chains be financed amid tightening capital markets, increasing geopolitical risk, and a low commodity price cycle?
Can Europe realistically meet its ambitious 100% EV target by 2035, if so, how?
How might the rush for regional supply security affect the distribution of battery technology developments?
How could emerging lithium extraction innovations such as DLE be impacted by geopolitical uncertainty?
How might Trump's tariffs impact the outlook for battery metals prices?
The event will draw from experts across the battery metals value chain, including
SQM
,
CATL
,
Porsche Consulting
,
Eramet
,
Techme
t
,
Standard Chartered
,
BMO Capital Markets
,
CleanTech Lithium, UKBIC,
SFA (Oxford)
and
SC Insights
, and will feature insightful lectures, stimulating debates, and interactive Q&A sessions. Once again, the lectures will be held in the prestigious Oxford University Museum of Natural History. The event will also be available online.

Abi Farrell Live at The Jericho, Oxford
Come and join soul vocalist and songwriter Abi Farrell and her 7-piece band for an unforgettable hometown gig at
The Jericho Tavern
in Oxford. Following a sell-out show here in April 2023, Abi is excited to return to one of her favourite venues alongside very special guest, Jess Fitz who will be performing a not-to-be-missed opening set.
About Abi Farrell
Abi Farrell was raised in rural Oxfordshire on a soundtrack of vocal powerhouses spanning the likes of Aretha Franklin, Chaka Khan, Candi Staton and Carole King. Named '
an artist on the rise.. a considerable talent'
by Blues and Soul Magazine, Abi is known for her effortlessly pure voice and lyrical dexterity, which is equally at home creating moving, introspective ballads as it is high-energy, empowering anthems. Lyrically, her music explores themes of identity, self-esteem, self-worth, empowerment, gender equality, mental health and social mobility. With an appeal that transcends generations, Abi's voice and songwriting explore the experience of navigating the world as a fiercely ambitious young woman from a working-class background.
Abi's music has been consistently embraced by the UK & international soul scene since releasing a string of singles in collaboration with Big AC Records, including 'I Will See You Through', 'Empowered', 'Don't Follow Me' and 'Stepping Out Of Your Shadow', which were produced by Mitch Ayling of
The Milk
and pressed to limited edition 7" vinyl. Her releases have been championed by Craig Charles on BBC Radio 2 and BBC 6 Music, who praised Abi's writing '
proper soul for the 21st century
'. 'Don't Follow Me', a social commentary on misogyny, was premiered by Robert Elms on BBC Radio London and subsequently led to Abi performing the track on BBC Radio 4's
Loose Ends.
Though Abi has been captivating live audiences since her teenage years, she has recently opened stages for Izo Fitzroy, Dee C Lee and Stone Foundation, has headlined the BBC Introducing stage at Oxfordshire's The Big Feastival, and has performed at venues such as Pizza Express Jazz Club, Pizza Express Live Holborn, The 100 Club, The Cavern Club Liverpool, Servant Jazz Quarters, Colours Hoxton, Oslo Hackney, and The Louisiana, Bristol.
In addition to her own artistry, Abi has performed backing vocals for many of her peers: Nick Corbin, Emma Noble, Carmy Love, The Milk, PM Warson, Denver Cuss and James Bone, and continues to lend her voice to music she loves.
This show will mark Abi's second performance at the Jericho Tavern, having played a sell-out gig in Spring 2023. It will celebrate new music which is due to arrive this Spring.
