The Science of The Multiverse: Do Parallel Universes Exist? | Saïd Business School (Park End Street) (University of Oxford)
May 20, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Oxford
Multiple universes and parallel worlds are all the rage in film and TV these days from the Marvel cinematic universe to
Stranger Things
. But multiverses are more than just fiction, many scientists are increasingly convinced that our universe is just one of a vast number of hidden worlds.
Multiverses crop up all over the place in physics. The modern Big Bang theory suggests that our Universe was just one of an effectively infinite number that are continuously being birthed. Some quantum physicists even argue that every time a choice is made, the universe branches into two parallel worlds. Multiverses have also been invoked to explain why our Universe seems peculiarly well set up for life to exist.
However, the idea of the multiverse is also hugely controversial, striking at the heart of what it means to do science. In this talk, particle physicist Dr Harry Cliff takes us on a tour of the multiverse, exploring why it's being taken seriously by many scientists and asking whether we’ll ever be able to access these other worlds.
Doors open at 7pm, talk starts at 7.30pm - come down early to grab a good seat!
Follow us on IG @seedtalks
Harry Cliff is a particle physicist based at the University of Cambridge and carries out research with the LHCb experiment at CERN's Large Hadron Collider. He was a curator at the Science Museum, London for seven years. His 2015 TED talk "Have We Reached the End of Physics?" has been viewed more than 3 million times.

Moudhy Al-Rashid and Paul Cooper in Conversation | Blackwell's Bookshop
Apr 22, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Oxford
Between Two Rivers
Thousands of years ago, in a part of the world we now call ancient Mesopotamia, people began writing things down for the very first time.
What they left behind, in a vast region between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, preserves leaps in human ingenuity, like the earliest depiction of a wheel and the first approximation of pi. But they also capture breathtakingly intimate, raw and relatable moments, like a dog's paw prints as it accidentally stepped into fresh clay, or the imprint of a child's teeth.
In
Between Two Rivers
, historian Dr Moudhy Al-Rashid reveals what these ancient people chose to record about their lives, allowing us to brush hands with them millennia later. We find a lullaby to soothe a baby, instructions for exorcising a ghost, countless receipts for beer, and the adorable, messy writing of preschoolers. We meet an enslaved person negotiating their freedom, an astronomer tracing the movement of the planets, a princess who may have created the world's first museum, and a working mother struggling with 'the juggle' in 1900 BCE.
Together, these fragments illuminate not just the history of Mesopotamia, but the story of how history was made.
Fall of Civilisations
Based on the podcast with over 100 million downloads, Fall of Civilizations brilliantly explores how a range of ancient societies rose to power and sophistication, and how they tipped over into collapse.
Across the centuries, we journey from the great empires of Mesopotamia to those of Khmer and Vijayanagara in Asia and Songhai in West Africa; from Byzantium to the Maya, Inca and Aztecs of Central America; from Roman Britain to Rapa Nui. With meticulous research, breathtaking insight and dazzling, empathic storytelling, historian and novelist Paul Cooper evokes the majesty and jeopardy of these ancient civilizations, and asks what it might have felt like for a person alive at the time to witness the end of their world.

Evening Class: Fantastical Etchings | Modern Art Oxford
Apr 24, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Oxford
Create etchings of fantastical machines and devices that could power or transform your domestic life.
Drawing inspiration from the playful and radical ideas of Dada and Fluxus artists, as well as the ‘assemblage’ work of Barbara Steveni, we’ll experiment with futuristic imagery and ideas while exploring traditional printmaking techniques. You’ll create your own etching, by incising lines in a plastic plate, which will be used to print your final image.
No artistic experience necessary. Bring your curiosity and a willingness to play, invent, and wonder.
This is the second of three evening classes inspired by our current exhibition Barbara Steveni: I Find Myself. Where Steveni declared, “I am an archive”, to reclaim the documentation of her life’s work, we propose: “I am an apparatus”. Tickets are sold per session to keep things flexible, but we encourage you to attend all three if you can!

DAHRENDORF LECTURE
After paradise: The US, EU and UK in a disordered world
Robert
Kagan
(Brookings Institution)
Chair:
Dimitar Bechev
(St Antony’s College, Oxford)
Robert Kagan builds on his long-standing argument that the liberal international order—once seen as a “paradise” of stability and cooperation—is increasingly under threat. Drawing from his influential works such as Of Paradise and Power and The Jungle Grows Back, Kagan explores how the US, EU, and UK are navigating a world marked by rising authoritarianism, geopolitical rivalry, and the erosion of global norms. He warns that without active leadership and strategic engagement from the West, the postwar order may give way to a more chaotic and dangerous international landscape.

History of Medicine - City Tour | Meet under the Bridge of Sighs
May 3, 2025 (UTC+1)ENDED
Oxford
The history of medicine is always a bit uncomfortable. This tour walks you through the medical history of the city from medieval plagues, to the founding of the medical school, and the first trials of penicillin.
Far from a straightforward linear progression, Oxford’s medical history is a complicated conversation about health equity, medical ethics, and continued clashes over the control of the body. Using the built environment, we examine health geographies, resistance to public health policies, and the tensions inherent in medical progress.
This tour platforms diverse stories while discussing histories of empire, race, class, and gender, highlighting how these narratives have an enduring impact on our modern lives.
All our tours are led by university researchers who have completed our official Uncomfortable Oxford training programme. Our guides combine expert knowledge and performance, ensuring each tour is a fun and educational experience.
Tour recommended for ages 12 and older.
