"Mend Piece" by Yoko Ono
"Mend Piece" is one of Yoko Ono's famous participatory art works that allows viewers to participate in the process of creating art, reflecting the concept of healing, creativity, and collaboration among people. This work is part of the concept.
"Mend Piece" invites us to let go of our thoughts, sit down, and repair broken ceramic fragments using glue, string, and various materials. The repair of broken things symbolizes the healing of physical and mental wounds of humans, and conveys the need for people to work together to create unity and restore what has been destroyed.
"Mend Piece" is inspired by the concept of Kintsugi, a traditional Japanese technique of repairing broken pottery, using tree resin mixed with gold, silver, or copper powder to fasten the broken pieces back together. This process not only restores the vessel to its usability, but also adds value and beauty to the broken pieces, reflecting the idea that breakage and repair are part of life and add value to objects.
At the same time, "Mend Piece" reflects the Japanese philosophy of Wabi-sabi, which emphasizes the beauty in imperfection, simplicity, and acceptance of the changing nature of things. The ceramic pieces are repaired with simple materials in a simple and honest way, leaving the joints imperfect, expressing the beauty in the imperfections and fragility that are inherent in nature.
The concept of "Mend Piece" is profound and reflects the idea of healing society and the world as a whole by allowing the audience to participate in repairing what is broken. Yoko Ono uses this to communicate that everyone can be a part of the restoration and creating something new from the original debris. The work also emphasizes the value of sacrifice, endurance and creativity in each other, and reminds humans to appreciate the value of brokenness and repair, to accept the imperfections in ourselves and the things around us, and to see the beauty in every moment of life.
