It is an ancient and beautiful temple that used to be the place where the Emerald Buddha (Phra Kaew Morakot) was enshrined. 🧏♂️In 1979, Phra Chao Sam Fang Kaen, the ruler of Chiang Mai, organized a procession to receive the Emerald Buddha from Chiang Rai to Chiang Mai. However, the elephants carrying the Emerald Buddha ran towards Lampang and refused to go to Chiang Mai. In the end, Phra Chao Sam Fang Kaen ordered the Emerald Buddha to be enshrined at Wat Phra Kaew Don Tao and resided at this temple for 32 years until 2011, when Phra Chao Tilokarat, the ruler of Chiang Mai, invited the Emerald Buddha to Chiang Mai. 🧏♀️The name of Wat Phra Kaew Don Tao has a legend that Nang Suchada found an emerald in a watermelon (Mak Tao in Northern Thai), so she brought it to the abbot of the temple to carve into a Buddha image, which is Phra Kaew Don Tao (currently enshrined at Wat Phra That Lampang Luang). 🙎♀️ As for Wat Suchadaram, it was built around 2325-2352 when the people of Chiang Saen were rounded up to establish a community in Lampang to commemorate Nang Suchada's good deeds after being sentenced to death due to a misunderstanding that later revealed the truth. It is believed that the location of this temple is Nang Suchada's house and watermelon farm in the past. Important places of worship at Wat Phra Kaew Don Tao Suchadaram, a royal temple, include: 🏡 Phra Borommathat Don Tao, a large pagoda containing the hair relics of the Lord Buddha, located on a hill. In front is a pavilion or pagoda in Burmese art, beautiful style, enshrining a large Buddha image. 🏡The temple enshrining the reclining Buddha, which is as old as the temple itself. 🏡The temple of Phra Chao Thong Thip, built by Queen Chamadevi, is over 1,000 years old and enshrines Phra Chao Thong Thip, a Buddha statue in the Chiang Saen style. 🏡The temple of Lai Kham Suchada Ram, a local architecture made by Chiang Saen craftsmen, is a brick and mortar building decorated with Thai paintings and gilded lacquer.
