French Alps

Deux Alpes is a village in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes department in France. It is located at an altitude of 1,650 meters and the lifts will operate to 3,600 meters. It has the largest skiable glacier in Europe and is the oldest ski resort in France after Chamonix. It has the longest fully vertical ski run in the world. In summer, the Deux Alpes becomes a popular venue for downhill and freeride mountain biking, with access to the glacier via a gondola lift and an annual event called "Hell on the Mountain". The event opened up a vertical mile of trails to the resort, with even greater drops leading to the Chambon River. The Double Alpes has appeared in several stages of the Tour de France, most notably in 1998 when Marco Pantani won the Tour de France. Some mountain bike enthusiasts take the 15 km unpaved road that leads from Les Deux Alpes to the ski resort, making it the highest mountain road in the Alps. The 1550m elevation gain, several very steep passes, and coarse gravel on the road make this a very strenuous journey. Extreme mountain bike riding, which once appeared in movies, is everywhere here in the summer.
