Montgenevre ski resort on the French-Italian border

Montgenevre Pass is a mountain pass in the French Alps, located at an altitude of 1,850 meters, between Mount Chaberton at an altitude of 3,131 meters and Mount Querras at an altitude of 3,320 meters, adjacent to the village of the same name, only 2.4 kilometers from the Italian border. Montgenevre connects Briançon in France and Cesana Torinese in Italy. It is believed that the Carthaginian general Hannibal led his army to Italy from here, and later the Romans conquered Gaul through here. Later, this place became the passage for Napoleon to conquer Italy. The obelisk commemorating Napoleon I (right side of Figure 1) now stands next to the main traffic artery of Montgenevre. Skiing first appeared in Montgenevre in 1895, where two Norwegian officers introduced and demonstrated skiing to French soldiers. In 1903, the Minister of War founded the first ski school in Briançon. By 1914, more than 5,000 military skiers would be trained there. And it helps spread the practice of skiing among the mountain dwellers by providing free pairs of skis to the villagers here. From February 9 to 13, 1907, the resort of Montgenevre hosted the first ski jumping competition, promoted by the French Alpine Club (CAF), the French Touring Club and the army, in front of about 3,000 spectators, including several delegation officials from Italy, Switzerland, Austria, Sweden and Norway.
