Grenoble, France, the capital of the Alps

Grenoble is the largest city in the Isère department in the Auvergne-Lorne-Alpes region in southeastern France. It is located where the Drac River flows into the Isère River at the foot of the French Alps. As of 2019, the city of Grenoble has a population of 158,198, while the entire Grenoble metropolitan area has a population of 714,799, making it the largest metropolitan area in the Alps, ahead of Innsbruck, Austria, and Bolzano, Italy. The host city of the 10th Winter Olympic Games in 1968 and an important scientific center in Europe. In 2022, it will be awarded the title of European Green Capital. Grenoble's history dates back more than 2,000 years, when it was a village of a Gallic tribe. In the 11th century, it was the capital of the Dauphiné Canton of the Holy Roman Empire. The city's status was consolidated by its incorporation into France, which enabled its economy to develop. Grenoble then became a parliamentary and military city, bordering the Savoy frontier of the Holy Roman Empire. The main attraction in the city is the Bastille Fortress, which is also a must-visit place for almost all tourists. From the fortress, you can clearly see the seventh highest peak in mainland France, the Aubiu Peak in the Alps, with an altitude of 2,790 meters (Figure 14). In my mind, Grenoble cannot be considered a tourist city, but it is the gateway and transportation hub on the west side of the Alps, and the end point of the famous Napoleon Road.
