Pirate Town Saint Malo, Brittany, France

Saint-Malo is a historic French port located in the Ille-et-Vilaine department of Brittany on the coast of the English Channel. Founded by the Gauls in the 1st century BC. The city has a long history of piracy, with much of its wealth made from local extortion and overseas adventures. Saint-Malo is notorious for being the home of pirates, French privateers and corsairs. The pirates of Saint-Malo not only forced tribute from English ships passing through the Channel, but also brought in wealth from further afield. Jacques Cartier of Saint-Malo, who first discovered North America on May 10, 1534, began to explore parts of Newfoundland, Canada, the Strait of Belle Isle and the southern shore of Labrador, the Gulf of St. Lawrence, the Gaspé and North Shore coastlines, and parts of the coastline of the Gulf. During the third exploration of the St. Lawrence River, he visited the villages of Costa Dacona and Hochelaga in Montreal, which have become the present-day ruins. The famous transatlantic single-handed sailing race "Route de Rum" is held every four years between Saint-Malo and Pointe-à-Pitre on the Caribbean island of Guadeloupe in the French overseas region.
