[Nara City] "Temukayama Hachiman Shrine," a famous spot for viewing autumn leaves, where the god of learning also wrote a poem

Located east of the Great Buddha Hall of Todaiji Temple, Tamukeyama Hachiman Shrine was founded in 749 (the first year of the Tenpyo-Shoho era) by enshrining Hachiman from Usa Hachiman Shrine (Oita Prefecture) as the guardian deity of Todaiji Temple. It is said to have originally been enshrined south of Heijo Palace, but was later moved to the vicinity of Todaiji Temple's Kagamiike Pond, but was destroyed in a fire during war. It was later rebuilt and moved to its current location by Hojo Tokiyori in 1250 (the second year of the Kencho era). The enshrined deities are Emperor Ojin, known as Hachiman, Emperor Chuai, Empress Jingu, Hime-no-Okami, and Emperor Nintoku. The grounds were filled with motifs of doves, messengers of the Hachiman deity. 🕊 Next to the offering box in the worship hall, there was a cute paper votive plaque featuring two facing doves, so I wrote one and offered it. ✍️ Given the local area, people from various countries have left messages there. In addition to the main hall, the grounds are home to many deities who played important roles in history, including Wakamiya Shrine (Emperor Nintoku), Takeuchi Shrine (Takeuchi Sukune), and Toshogu Shrine (Tokugawa Ieyasu). ⛩ Mount Temmuke, a long-standing spot for autumn foliage, is famous for the poem by Sugawara no Michizane: "This time, even offerings, Mount Temmuke, the autumn leaves of which are at the mercy of the gods." 🍁 There's also a stone on the grounds where Michizane is said to have sat, and many visitors are said to come here to pray for academic success. The autumn leaves planted nearby were beautifully hued, creating a gradation of colors. ✨️ Last weekend, the ginkgo trees were in full bloom, and the maples were starting to change color from top to bottom, so this weekend seems like the perfect time!
