It's easy to overdose on Tulou scenic spots, especially if you spend a couple of days touring the various scenic areas. The Tianluokeng scenic area offers stunning landscapes and more authentic experience of Tulou life compared to some of the other 'themed' Tulou attractions. Two days sightseeing is sufficient to get a real taste and feel for Tulou culture, especially after youve visited 2 to 3 different clusters. There are some lovely guest houses. We stayed at the Nanjing Tulou Culture 1949 resort. Aside from the family friendly rooms and Instagramable decor, the honestly cuisine is incredible. Travelling as a family of 6 with 3 young children, a private hire car was a must and makes visiting Tulou attractions both convenient and allows you to go at your own pace. The Fujian tulou (also known as earthen building) are rural dwellings in the mountainous areas in China. They were constructed between the 12th and the 20th centuries, and unique to the Hakka. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Fujian Province is in southeast China, north of Guangdong Province. The Hakka only built tulou in Fujian. A tulou is a large building, constructed with load-bearing rammed earth walls. It is used as a residence by a group of families. Tulous have three or four floors: the first floor for kitchens and dining rooms; the second floor for grain stores; and the third and fourth floors for bedrooms. In the past, tulous played a significant role in protecting the Hakka from attacks. Residents could easily mount an all-round defense, and the vulnerable entrances were strongly reinforced.

Getting There - We hired a private driver that picked us up at our hotel. The driver took us to various view points and Tuluo’s. It was a great site to visit. The Tuluo’s offer a different insight into the culture groups here in China. Walking inside the Tuluo’s one can observe how the locals enjoy their lives. One can purchase tickets at the ticket hall and just take the day as it comes. On busy days be prepared for waiting as the roads are small and traffic can be slow. Definitely worth the visit.

Hidden attractions in Fujian: Tianluokeng Tulou Group. mentioned Fujian, the first time everyone thinks about it is the photo of Gulangyu. The small island is sunny, warm and humid, and is very popular with tourists. In addition to enjoying a slow life in Gulangyu, Fujian has a small attraction not to be missed. It is the earth building of Zhangzhou. Before the fire of the anime "Big Fish Sea Bream", few tourists visited. This is a recommended itinerary for families with children. Two adults could easily do it in 4 nights and 5 days, but traveling with kids requires patience and time. 😁 Day 1: Arrive at Gaoqi Airport, check in at the hotel, and explore Zengchuan Night Market. 🌃 The night market was just as good as I'd seen on TV. My kids loved the grilled squid, so they were delighted. Day 2: Visit Zhongshan Road Pedestrian Street, have some Ruixing coffee, and go to Riyuegu Hot Springs to play in the water. 🏊🏻♂️The 10,000th Ruixing store is on Zhongshan Road. The luxurious interior blends perfectly with the European-style streets of Zhongshan Road. Riyuegu is a place that both adults and children will enjoy. ❗️We booked a VIP tour through Trip.com, which included dedicated lockers, swim caps, a dedicated lounge, and even a fruit buffet. The hami fruit was the freshest I've ever had. 😄 Day 3: Visit Gulangyu Island, Shapowei Art Street Thankfully, the kids followed us all the way to the top of Sunlight Rock. ❗️If you buy VIP ferry tickets on Trip.com, the staff will take you to the ferry entrance (that's it, haha). Day 4: Head to Yunshui Yao Village We'll head to Yunshui Yao Village in a pre-booked rental car (I have a Chinese driver's license, so I can rent one). On the way, we'll stop at Wanda Mall in Zhangzhou for lunch and take our time. In my experience, Chinese highway rest areas are a bit tricky for foreigners. 😁 Day 5: We'll visit Huaiyuan Road, Jeollagang Tolu, and King of Tolu. We'll go to Tolu Day and return to Xiamen. The kids only showed up at first...they're getting bored. You'll have to coax them along. Day 6: Fantasy Dreamland For the kids who followed us, we'll go to Fantasy Dreamland. Compared to Korean theme parks, there are no waiting lines. The entrance fee is expensive, but you can ride all the rides you like. ❗️In November, it's Halloween season, so we'll wear horror costumes. There were a lot of NPCs. Day 7: Visited the only one coffee shop, SM Mall. I found this cafe after searching online, but it was a bit disappointing. The prices are comparable to Jeju Island, but the view isn't quite there. ㅠㅜ You should judge based on your own preferences. Day 8: Return to Korea ❗️Hotel Recommendations Main Island: For foreigners, the Grand Swiss Hotel is the best. It has a view of Gulangyu Island, a 10-minute walk from Zhongshan Road, delicious breakfast, and friendly hotel staff. It's got everything you need. If you're looking for a true retreat, I recommend the Portman Seven Stars Bay Hotel. Rainbow Beach is right in front (I woke up at 6am every day to jog, it was so great), and the European-style hotel exterior (so stunning that some people come just to take pictures) was also amazing. Xihai has an antique feel, while Ocean Outlook has a modern feel. The tulou area is about a two-hour taxi ride from Xiamen city. We'll be driving along country roads. This tulou area is famous for its windmill views, but due to the rain and muddy waters, the windmills weren't very pretty. There were two or three tulou here. One was square, and two were round. You could look inside all of them. The area around the tulou has become a tourist destination, with restaurants and souvenir shops. While this area is also worth seeing, I personally recommend the second tulou area! However, you can't go above the second floor in the second tulou area, but here you can explore the floors above for just 10 NTD. 🟠Tian Luokeng Tulou 💸Tickets: 90 NTD About a 30-minute taxi ride from the first tulou area leads to another famous tulou area. You'll climb a steep, winding mountain path. There's a large ticket booth just before the trail, so pay 90 NTD per adult there and continue on the trail. After climbing the mountain path, we first came to a photo spot overlooking the five tulou from the top of the mountain. Next, we took a taxi (or apparently you can walk there too) down the mountain and toured the inside of the tulou. This area features five tulou lined up, making it a popular photo spot. Not only are they photogenic, but these tulou have a more local and secluded feel, making them more enjoyable than the first one. However, unlike the first tulou area, you can't go above the second floor here. You can enter all five tulou. 🟠大海鱼 💸Dinner 305 NTD In the evening, like on the first day, we went to Eight Markets in Xiamen. A bustling street of food stalls reminiscent of a night market. We went in the afternoon on the first day, but the evening was lively and fun. We had dinner at a seafood restaurant a little further from Eight Markets. We ordered about five dishes for a fairly reasonable price of NT$305. Everything was delicious, but I especially recommend the sweet potato fried rice. The Thai rice was light and chewy, with a great texture. 🟠Yashi 💸Tsujingu (Red Root Fruit) - NT$8 After dinner, we strolled around the nearby Yashi. The night market was bustling with activity. I tried the fruit juice I saw so many people drinking. Tsujingu (Red Root Fruit) is apparently a fruit known by names like horned bitter melon and kiwano. Its distinctive jelly-like fruit and seeds are its distinctive features. How to get there: Joining a day tour from Xiamen is the most common way to visit, as guides efficiently take you to the famous tulou sites. If you prefer to travel independently, you can take a bus or train from Xiamen to Yongding or Nanjing, and then use local minibuses or taxis to reach the tulou. Note that taxi drivers and locals generally do not speak English, so knowledge of Chinese is essential!
