Scandic Hafjell

Such a shame. Our stay had started so well. We were allocated a room facing the E6 so asked Reception for a change as we like to have a window open and the room was noisy. No problem – our room was swiftly changed with a smile. But then next morning we made a mistake. We went out without putting the ‘Do Not Disturb’ sign on our door. This apparently gives Housekeeping free reign to enter the room despite not putting up the ‘Make Up My Room’ sign. They removed and disposed of a bag of ours from our room, the contents of which they presumably decided was rubbish but it was actually a folding, re-usable supermarket bag, something we were keeping as a travel memento from Sweden. Somewhat ironically, the bag was beneath the Scandic poster where they congratulate themselves on being industry leaders by not having housekeeping change towels unless they’re on the bathroom floor – yep, they changed our towels as well despite them being hung on the towel rail. The bag removed was not near the bins at all, just in spare floorspace over by the door, out of the way. It didn’t seem important to anyone else, but it was special to us and essentially, irreplaceable. Reception staff made a search for our bag long after we brought it to their attention but of course it was not found. There was no offer from Scandic of recompense to replace the bag, compensation or offer of goodwill, like a free drink at the bar. We have been travelling for over 30 years using all types of accommodation and have never had anything like this happen before. Housekeeping removing anything that isn’t in a bin, next to the bin or in a bin bag should be unthinkable. The bad housekeeping and lack of any management intervention or even acknowledgement of our loss will certainly stop us being Scandic Friends in the future. We did love staying at a Scandic, but they’ve just fallen off their pedestal with a crash!
Quality Hotel Strand Gjøvik

Book a self-driving car two hours in advance. The room is clean, the front desk service is very good, and the breakfast is great. There is a small stream flowing in front of the hotel. It is recommended to ask the front desk in advance for parking. They can tell you the place for 50KR a night. We didn’t know where to park in front. The parking lot cost 340 for one night, but the hotel is nice anyway

I spent a few weeks at Grand in November and December, and I could not be more pleased with my stay. If you are going to visit Gjøvik Grand is the perfect place to stay. It’s a short walk from the rail- and bus station, and once settled in your room you live in the heart of what can be called the “restaurant district” of Gjøvik. The hotel is connected to Egons, but I recommend experiencing the restaurants and cafes close by. Within a few minutes’ walk you can eat Thai, Vietnamese, Chinese, Italian, Turkish, Indian, and Spanish and Latin food, and the hotel also offers a great evening meal! Grand offers both breakfast and an evening meal included in the stay. Having experienced evening meals in other hotels I did not expect much and I was very pleasantly surprised. The evening meal is a full dinner with usually two options where soup is a constant. The food tastes great. I had the best Boeuf Bourguignon at Grand! It is a clearly a big advantage that the hotel has their own chiefs, since the quality is consistent. In addition there is “fika” with Norwegian waffles every afternoon. They taste good. I was very pleased with my room. Bed was comfortable and big plus with the two armchairs. Great pillows! I also had a very nice bathroom. Housekeeping is not daily for visitors that stay for more than a night, but you inform the front desk when you want to have your room taken care of. The staff is very friendly and I have only good things to say about their service level. There was always a “good morning” and a friendly face. In addition to being close to other restaurants it is also close by the stores downtown and to the shopping centre CC Gjøvik. Before heading to the shopping centre I recommend to see what the individual and independent stores have to offer.

Radisson Blu Resort, Trysil

Having read some reviews from February just before our visit, I will admit I was concerned pre-arrival. I didn’t need to be. Hotel is fantastic for kids and ski in/out is convenient and well organised. I love my food and, as a general rule, dislike buffet style eating. The buffet was fantastic (for buffet food). Of course it is not and never could be true gourmet/michelin level but quality was excellent, variety plentiful and all needs were largely catered for (I didn’t see many Vegan options but I wasn’t looking either). Breakfast buffet was great to load up energy pre-skiing. Pool, although busy at times, was great fun for the kids. The climbing wall into the pool is genius. What I would say is, this is a genuine family hotel and set up as such. If you want quiet relaxation by a pool and gourmet meal every night, look elsewhere. If you have a family and want a great value, high quality skiing experience, do not hesitate. Not relevant to hotel but as an FYi, Trisyl is a beginners to intermediate skier resort. If you are advanced and want to be challenged, this is not the place.

Scandic Valdres
4/578 Reviews
A very rustic and historic looking hotel in Valdres. The interior and design are very classical, and the interior design is clearly from the original time of construction, giving the hotel a unique look and feel. The check in went easily and the receptionist was easy to deal with and welcoming. Got a free upgrade here as well as they had capacity. Had dinner at the hotel since there are not many restaurants around. The menu is fairly limited, and you should not expect any complex dishes in design or flavour. The dishes are classical and overall well made though, so you will have a filling meal nonetheless. The chocolate fondant for dessert was good but again the dishes are pretty simplistic. The trout for the main course was well prepared, though I would have missed some more complex sides to really elevate the protein. Had a Moscow mule and it was decently good. Though they did not have copper mugs, which is always a minus. They had an okay selection of beer on tap, and I had a Brooklyn lager of that as well to end off the meal. The breakfast hall has a whole rustic old school design to it and seemingly handcrafted chairs and more, which helps to immerse you in the history of this hotel. The superior room was spacious and we even had a balcony, which is quite rare nowadays in hotels. Spacious and clean, so nothing much to complain about there. The classical design of the hotel and look of everything helps make it feel different and a more unique experience and stay than the average modern constructions. A very reasonably good stay in Valdres.
Scandic Hamar
4/575 Reviews
High standard town hotel, in walking distance to Hamar center. Our double room provided everything a guest can dream of. Good quality of bed, well thought-of bathroom with lots of shelves to put items on. Large & excellent breakfast buffet, incl. professional coffee machine with lots of choices. The only downside: reception area a bit cold and oversized. No atmosphere at bar.

Tynset Hotel
4.1/550 Reviews
My wife and I were both going to undertake a minor operation at Tynset Hospital on the 24th September and decided to travel to Tynset the day before and as we couldn’t travel on the same day as the operation it meant spending two nights here. What a pleasure it turned out to be. The room was spacious although the bathroom practical it was verk minimal. However, we decided to eat in the hotel’s restaurant which was definitely a good choice. We had the salmon the for starter the reindeer the main course, finished off with the brûlée. The choice of wine was not extensive, but nonetheless very good. The house wine is also good. We didn’t feel particularly well after our operation, but the venison choice on the menu made up for that. The breakfast buffet was also excellent and the fact that you could help yourself to coffee at anytime during your stay, free of charge, was also a very good service. All members of the staff that we came into contact with were very helpful too. Highly recommended Ian
