Appleby Manor Hotel & Garden Spa

Appleby Manor Hotel & Garden Spa

"Just got back home from this Spa break purchased for £89 plus £20 weekend supplement. On arrival the hotel middle aged women on reception, was rude and abrupt! She sternly asked what we wanted! When I explained we were on the travel zoo spar break she asked for our surname and spa start time. When I gave hur my surname and time she lifted the phone and spoke to the spa staff saying in an abrupt fashion our surnames are here no Mr or Mrs, just our name as front of house we found this unwelcoming,The spa staff were absolutely fantastic and explained what we got .The spa facilities were ok apart from one steam room not working, and the male locker area was far too small .After two hours of spa relaxing. We went to get our Pizza Chicken. What an absolute rip off it was a tasteless frozen pizza that was tarted up with a few bits of chicken and peppers . I turned the pizza upside down to see the minute holes in the pizza dough, proving it was a processed pizza it was lacking in taste and absolutely disgusting. The dining room was dark and unwelcoming .The restaurant staff were very friendly and the service was ok for the price I paid it was just a glorified swimming pool , I wouldn't recommend it.Sad really because the grounds and views were spectacular"

"We arrived to the castle and it was like a ghost town we knocked on reception door and rang the bell nobody came, we called the number and the man came to let us in he checked us in then showed us to our room and was shocked we had booked dining plans outside of the castle. We were shown our room which was on an uphill slant which wasn’t too much of a bother and he did say they wasn’t aloud to make any changes, the room was creaky and old as you would imagine with it being such an old castle there is no Tv the bed is really comfy and the bathroom nice and modern with very good water pressure however we settled in for the night only to be awoken at 12AM by what sounded like a washing machine on full fast spin mode which we think may have been the boiler in our room and from then on we didn’t get one wink of sleep so the night away to catch up on sleep ended up with us leaving more tired than when we arrived there was no warning about the noise or anything from the hosts no signs to make us aware. There is no staff only the owners so at this time we were unable to request a room change. We paid £189 to lay awake all night which is highly frustrating. Unfortunately wouldn’t be back and wouldn’t recommend this room shouldn’t be available to guests because nobody could sleep through that noise."

"We had an overnight stay en route to Scotland. An excellent find! Very clean and comfortable, and Ann was a friendly and welcoming host. We felt very much at home. Conveniently located, with a car park on site, and a short walk into the town centre. Breakfast was cooked to order, and set us up for the day. I would be happy to stay here again."

"Lovely place and atmosphere, visited as a family for Sunday lunch. Nice choice of food on the menus and reasonably priced, service was good, polite and friendly. Food and portions were average, kids meal portions are small and ideal for little ones. One plus is didn’t realise until paid the bill kids meals are free with an adult meal so that’s a saver for families."

Appleby Manor Hotel & Garden Spa ★★★★
"spa day, 3rd visit for us, not as nice as it used to be, needs re-decorating throughout, not very clean, all clocks had wrong times, meals were wrongly served, massage room cold and not nice, only positive was the friendly staff, relaxation room shabby, towels not as fluffy, I did email the general manager Andrew about the issues and basically got a sorry, we sadly wont be returning to Appleby Manor Spa"

Appleby Castle ★★★
"We were booked in for one night and had upgraded to the ‘Hothfield Room’ for an additional charge of £85. At lunchtime on the day we were due to check in, we were close by at Kirkby Stephen. I received a telephone call from the manager saying that evening dinner was cancelled at the Castle as the Chef had a medical emergency. I specifically asked if dinner was cancelled because we were the only reservation for dinner and he denied it. I then asked him if we were the only guests staying at the Castle and he denied that, saying there were other guests staying. Funny thing is… we never saw another guest at the Castle once the manager had booked us in and disappeared. We saw no-one at breakfast or any evidence that other guest(s) had been in the castle. There were no other cars parked at the castle entrance other than mine and the manager’s car. On arrival we were upgraded further to a fabulous four poster bed in a room called ‘Evidence’. The room and bathroom were clean, and furnishings are everything you would expect in a castle that is 900 years old. The room was quite cold mostly due to the weather outside and the fact that you cannot fit double glazed windows to a listed castle. I was told the bar would be open, but when I found it later, there was no-one there and no-one about. Martha went looking for a couple of extra blankets but simply could not find anyone…. In-spite of wandering around, going down to reception and calling out in a much pleasanter voice than I would have. At this point it did feel spooky…. We went down to breakfast at 08.30 hrs and again had to look for someone… tables were part made up but we had to ask for spoons, sugar and glasses for orange juice. It was clear that no-one had been down for breakfast because there were no other guests there. I did not bother with breakfast because it just seemed to much of a fuss. Martha had porridge and poached eggs and said it was fine. We did not see the manager or anyone else when we left, the place was deserted. We had to ask the chef/cook to open the large gates so we could leave. Here are the pros and cons of our experience: Pros (1) Definitely an experience… staying in a 900-year-old castle. (2) Probably the best night sleep I have ever had…. The four-poster bed had a huge deep mattress. Cons (1) They Wanted £10 each for entering the keep and walking up to the top which was the same price as to a casual visitor. Should have been free to a guest. (2) Rooms are overpriced at £85 for the initial upgrade which was by no means the most expensive on the list…. The lack of communication and service spoiled the experience. We had a mobile phone number to ring if we needed help but fully expected to see someone else during our stay. (3) Only one obvious power socket in room, but managed to find a hidden, second one by climbing under the four-poster bed. If you have a CPAP machine for health purposes, it’s a bind. (4) It is obvious that the costs of maintaining Appleby Castle"

"Amazing place. The room was spotlessly clean, as was bathroom. The owner, Ann, went above and beyond to ensure we enjoyed our stay. Breakfast was cooked to perfection. Would 100% recommend and hope to return."

"Late lunch driving back from the lakes. Came across the Sandford purely by chance. A warm and friendly greeting and a lovely feel to the place. Two of us had the giant yorkshire pudding which was really really good. The Sandford chicken and king prawn curry were also well cooked and delicious."
