It is not necessary, but you may feel more comfortable with an AWD or 4WD to access the property.**The Saddle Tree story...There are countless reasons to fall in love with Dahlonega. The picturesque town square lined with historic buildings, boutique shops, cozy cafés, and local art galleries. The brick sidewalks and preserved 1800s architecture. The warm and welcoming community. The rich history and golden legacy. Award-winning vineyards. And, of course, the breathtaking mountain landscape. Denise had been through Dahlonega a couple of times as a kid and loved it, so when she and her husband started looking for property, the hidden gem of a town made perfect sense. “We love what [Dahlonega] has to offer,” Denise says. “There is something for everyone: art, music, great restaurants, little mom n’ pop stores. We have Bear on the Square…” — an annual festival celebrating Appalachian culture, music, and art. “Plenty of outdoor adventures. You can go rent 4-wheelers at Iron Mountain” — a massive off-road adventure park — “or go to the vineyards, or take in a concert. There’s just so much.” And it’s the perfect blend of mountains and river, “...without being alone on a mountaintop,” she laughs. Having picked the perfect little town, Denise and Jess, her husband, built the perfect little cabin: a functional yet stylish, simple yet classy, not-a-detail-overlooked shotgun house. I complimented her on the minimalist architecture and decor, the sense of spaciousness, and the bright colors and textures she chose for Saddle Tree. “We are into the aesthetics of clean lines and uncluttered space — and don’t like having a bunch of stuff or walls covered,” she says. They have a great eye for design. The light surfaces and walls combine beautifully with the blonde and dark wood furniture and structural accents, the sleek lines, and not a square inch of wasted space. They didn’t waste any wood, either: all the wood used in the house, the gorgeous poplar and dark walnut shelves, chunky cross beams, railings, were salvaged from the trees that had to be felled in order to build the cabin.“I love trees,” she says, “and I don’t like cutting them down — but we had to. Using that wood in the cabin was super important to us.”The lighting, too, is important. “There needs to be a certain ambiance in our home, so all the bulbs are warm and dimmable. The stairs are subtly lit… At night it’s pure magic in here.” The longer we spoke, the clearer it became to me that Denise and Jess had well-defined ideas of the caliber of experience they wanted to provide their guests. As someone who loves to cook, she outfitted the kitchen with quality everything, and probably too much of it. “Honestly,” she confides, “Based on what most people will do in this kitchen… it’s way overstocked. But the way I see it, when people stay here, they can’t have things that are worse than what they have at home — it should even be a treat or an upgrade.”Speaking of “treats,” wait until you check out the coffee bar. Fit for a coffee snob from New York City or Seattle or Paris, it has a fresh grinder, a frother, pour-over, carafe, pod, you name it. Also: regular mugs, insulated mugs, large, small…“Sometimes I feel like we built the whole house around that coffee bar,” Denise chuckles. “But it was worth it. Sitting on that deck with my morning cup, or, better yet, on the swing over the river, listening to the water lapping at the shore… pure bliss.” Denise confesses that in addition to coffee, there are a few other things that she will pay top dollar for: “Good sunglasses, shoes, and linens.” Also, a brand new climate control system. “At Saddle Creek we want it toasty in the winter, and cool in the summer… and when you’re here, we want you to never want to get out of bed!”Between the coffee, coziness, and high thread count luxury linen, why would you want to?I ask Denise if the cabin is dog friendly.“Of course!” she says. “The warmth of an animal is what makes it a home.” She and Jess have two fur babies of their own, a German Shepherd and a cockapoo, and having their best buddies with them makes all the difference. For a moment I picture myself at sunset, gently rocking in the swing by the river, a glass of local merlot in one hand, the other on top of my dog’s shaggy head resting on my leg. Behind the hypnotizing sound of the Etowah River are the sounds of a bluegrass band, the notes carried up from town on the cool evening breeze.Driving to the house: The road to the house is long and gravel. AT times, depending on the weather, the road can become very muddy and have ruts. It is not steep and most can get there no matter what they are driving. Please know this in advance and only book if you are comfortable with driving muddy rutted roads.~Pro Tips & Local Wisdom~Warm up at Corner Kitchen in Dahlonega with a mug of their outstanding joe in your hands.Antiquing (now no longer just for old people!) She and her husband, were doing a lot of the work on both houses themselves. “What started as a process of blood, sweat, and a few tears,” she admits, “quickly became a labor of love.”I tell her that the love comes through, even in photos of the absolutely adorable little A-frame cabin. She thanks me graciously. “We’re so very proud of it.”As their hometown of Ashville continued to grow, they had started looking for some peace and quiet farther south. When they found Dahlonega, with its magical combination of history, natural beauty, outdoor activities, and local culture, they knew they had found their new home. The town’s residents exude a sense of warmth and charm: “People here are some of the genuinely kindest, friendliest, and good-natured folk you can ever meet."They had done a fair bit of traveling. At first it was just the two of them and their mild-mannered spaniel-lab mix; then the baby came along. They had stayed at lots of AirBnb’s — “We’re just not hotel people” — but were frequently disappointed.“Some places claimed to be dog-friendly, or appropriate for families, but that’s not the sense we got from them.”When they started building Tiny Mansion as a rental property (and a place for visiting family to stay), they decided to create something they would have appreciated in their traveling days.“[Tiny Mansion] has water-proof flooring, a wipe-off couch, a fenced-in yard where the dog can bark to its heart’s content — and you’re in the woods, so you don’t have to shush your screaming kid, either."It’s not all about function, though, as you’ll see stepping through the front door. The cabin is the definition of minimalist, stylish, light-filled, funky comfort. From the mushroom ottoman and live edge coffee table (“The woods here are mushroom heaven!”) to the industrial-style rustic shelves and spiral staircase — they put a lot of thought and effort into form, too. The lighting is just right all over the house, and the white tile/wood/gray theme really makes this chic new build really pop. Amenities and gadgets — the gas heater on the deck, and smokeless stove in the yard — make it an even cozier escape for you and one or two other people you really like. Or love. And a furbaby. As we finish our conversation I ask her about the pine tree growing through the deck.“I’m crazy about them,” she says. “Trees, I mean. I love the shade and the smell of them. I love the woods…”When building Tiny Mansion, they took out as few trees as possible, and insisted on that old pine staying right where it was. The carpenter, a friend of theirs, built the deck around it.Whether it’s the surrounding forests in this southern Appalachian region, filled with pines and oaks and dogwoods (a beloved symbol of spring in Georgia), the friendly people, or this charming cabin that gets you here… You and yours will love and cherish your time in Dahlonega.Pro Tips & Local Wisdom:Warm up at Corner Kitchen in Dahlonega with a mug of their outstanding joe in your hands.Antiquing (now no longer just for old people!) Step into the past with the comforts of the present in this newly restored cabin. The nature of this cabin will take you back to a time when horse and carriage was the means of travel and sleeping porches were a thing.Nearby:Wineries10 min to DahlonegaGold MinesButterfly FarmMeaderyMount YonahFeatures:4 Comfortable Queen Size BedsLarge Screened Porch with SwingFirepitModern KitchenLarge Family Gathering TableAntique FurnitureWiFiSecludedThe House The earliest construction of the Porter Springs Farmhouse pre-dates the Civil War and has been continuously owned by the same family. It was part of the Queen of the Mountains hotel and resort, situated just a short distance from the Farmhouse and was located in what was known as the community of Porter Springs. Queen of the Mountains, referred to by family as “The Old Hotel,” was a summer get-away for many people in Atlanta because of the cooler weather and the legendary benefits of the springs on the property. Dinner was enjoyed with orchestral music, and there was a bowling alley and other entertainments. Cold outdoor showers were the norm because running water was not available. Travel from Atlanta was usually a two-day journey by coach, with a stop in Gainesville. It’s believed that Porter Springs Farmhouse began as a caretaker’s or hunter’s cabin. The house was given to my great uncle by my great-great grandfather, Colonel Henry Patillo Farrow, the owner of the Old Hotel. The original house constitutes the oldest part of the Farmhouse and includes the living room and two bedrooms, all having painted surfaces. The “newer” part of the house is the log portion. Construction began in 1909 when my great-uncle learned that his future bride’s dream was to live in a log house. The wood used to build the Farmhouse consists of some American Chestnut, which grew prolifically around the house until the blight in the early 1940’s. The house was added onto over the years with whatever wood was available on the surrounding land. Throughout the generations, the Farmhouse has been a gathering place for young and old alike. Games were a beloved past time, family gatherings were common, and practical jokes abounded. Frog gigging at night, making corncob pipes for rabbit tobacco, visiting Trahlyta’s grave (Stonepile Gap) in the dark to see if she’d speak to visitors, hiking Blood Mountain, and telling ghost stories were some of the favorite memories of the older generation. Because the house is so old, we have unwelcome visitors from time to time, and you might see a mouse. However, we have made them feel so unwelcome in recent years that it’s a rare occurrence. There is also the dust factor. Try as we might to clean the house, it just sheds dirt and dust. Therefore, a visit to Porter Springs Farmhouse isn’t for everyone but the person who appreciates history and can imagine camping indoors with the comforts of heat, air conditioning, washer and dryer, internet, dishwasher, big-screen tv, home office, and oven/stove.ExplorationsAround the house, you’ll see some evidence of the Old Hotel. Some fun explorations include spending some time with the green benches on the front porch where late 1800’s visitors to the Old Hotel carved their names into the benches. Try googling them and see what you can learn! Also on the porch are lights on both sides of the front door that are taken from old stagecoaches. Try writing a story about what it would be like to ride in a stagecoach! Inside the house, the dining room furniture is original to the house, and the dining room table is from the Old Hotel. Because rodents were always a problem in the past (and sometimes in the present!), the kitchen cabinets are protected by hooks on the interior and wooden locks on the exterior. Similar locks were employed on bathroom, bedroom and exterior doors. The windows are “locked” with wooden locks and a nail. Feel free to explore the house and all of the interesting ways in which every day life was lived. Sites and SoundsMany different animals have been raised over the years at the Farmhouse including chickens, goats, and most recently, Angus cattle. Today, neighbors raise Angus cattle, and they surround the Farmhouse. Grazing on private property, they come close enough to the house to hear them chewing the grass, snorting, and calling out to their young. Because bulls are also present, wandering the pasture or going down to the creeks is absolutely forbidden. Dogs must be leashed when they go outside so they don’t risk running into the pasture and getting injured or spooking the cattle. There are many other animals around the house. We have seen bears, deer and turkeys, and hear the calls of many birds, including owls. Our favorite place to sit and enjoy the wildlife is the front porch, where there is a frequent breeze - even on the hottest days.Pet Fee is $75 per dog. We only allow dogs. No cats. Pets shall always be secured within the boundaries of the property. If the property is not fenced, pets must be kept on a leash and always accompanied by the pet owner while outside. If you plan to go out and leave your dog at the cabin, please know that we require they be crated in your absence. Please note: This is an old cabin that has been updated. It still has a lot of old cabin quirks and features. The fireplaces are not functional! They were kept for their historical value. Please be aware that you will be receiving a link to our booking contract via text within 24 hours of making your reservation. Escape with family and friends to this serene and centrally located retreat in Dahlonega, GA—renowned as the "City of Gold"! Just a short drive from Atlanta and conveniently situated right off the main highway (400), our getaway offers both tranquility and easy access to essential amenities such as grocery stores, gas stations, and pharmacies. Whether you're seeking adventure or relaxation, there’s something for everyone!**The Adventure Inn** is perched on a charming small mountain along a private, unpaved road, nestled within 1 acre of lush, tree-surrounded land. Enjoy full access to the entire property and take the opportunity to hike and explore the scenic mountain road, which boasts stunning valley views. While there are a few neighbors on the mountain who cherish their privacy, we kindly ask that you limit your exploration to our cabin property and the main mountain road.Beyond the immediate property, Dahlonega awaits with a wealth of activities and sights to discover. From historic tours and gold panning to wine tasting and outdoor adventures, this vibrant area promises memorable experiences for all ages. We highly encourage you to venture out and immerse yourself in all that Dahlonega has to offer!---A few things to note:- The road to the cabin on the mountain is not completely paved and the terrain is uneven. While most vehicles can navigate it without any issues, we advise against attempting the drive with vehicles that have a very low clearance. While a 4WD is not necessary, a low-clearance vehicle may struggle to traverse the road.- Please be aware that GPS directions may sometimes lead you to the wrong driveway. Look for a white mailbox with the number 350 displayed on the side. Our driveway is just beyond that mailbox.- For your convenience, we provide a basic starter pack of supplies for your stay, including 1 roll of paper towels in the kitchen, 2 trash bags, 1 roll of toilet paper for each bathroom, 2 dishwasher pods, and 2 laundry pods. We recommend that you bring additional supplies to ensure you have enough for your entire group and the duration of your stay. Should you need further supplies, there are nearby stores such as Publix, Home Depot, and Walmart, all within a 15-minute drive from the cabin.- Please note that we do not supply firewood, so we suggest bringing your own if you plan to use the fire pit.- While ride-sharing options like Ubers and Lyfts are limited in Dahlonega, there are three excellent local taxi services available: Mama’s Taxi, Pop’s Taxi, and Savoir Faire Taxi Service & Wine Tours. We recommend scheduling your rides in advance, especially during the busy wedding seasons of Spring, Summer, and Fall, as these services may have limited availability for on-the-spot pickups.
