📍 Fford Newydd, Harlech

"I arrived at the hotel early evening, it was in complete darkness, no lights on anywhere, not even the car park. It looked closed/shut down. A man opened the front door with just the reception light on, he struggled to speak English, I could barely understand him. He told me the hotel was closed and just I would be staying alone at the hotel with only him, which as a solo female traveller I was very uncomfortable and felt very venerable with this situation. He did not understand why the booking had been taken, even if it was last minute. There was no heating or hot water. When he showed me the room (not the one I had booked), it was much smaller, there were a couple of heaters. I asked if the hotel lights would be turned on to be told only the stairs lights would come on if I walked through, not that I would be walking through the hotel or car park in darkness on my own! I told the man I was very uncomfortable with this situation and requested a refund, he said he understood why I would feel uncomfortable but could not offer a refund. I have tried contacting the hotel to request a refund, I am still waiting for a response."

Castle Cottage Inn ★★★

"What a fabulous place. Our room (no. 4), on the ground floor, with a limited view of the castle, (1 minute walk away) was spacious and spotlessly clean. It had some lovely extras, such as bathroom scales, air conditioning unit, fan, clothes steamer, comfy sofa and fridge. There were lots of toiletries in the bathroom, which had a bath and wet room. There were plenty of beverages, biscuits and a bottle of water. Pattra was a perfect hostess, nothing was too much trouble and she made sure we wanted for nothing. Castle Cottage Inn is on (allegedly) the steepest street in the world, and with only 3 parking spaces, it was a tight squeeze getting in (not for the faint-hearted). We ate in Pattra's restaurant once which was delicious. Harlech is a small place with therefore limited eating places, but we tried the local pizza restaurant which was made delicious pizzas. We will definitely be recommending Castle Cottage Inn to our friends."

"Not a very friendly welcome from the owner, my friend's dog feels intimidated If another dog gets close. This was explained when booked. On arrival, the 2 big huskies (although lovely) were wandering around the reception area. I was told when booking that the dogs stayed in the bar area. When asked if he would just move them whilst we checked in he replied "well you knew this was a dog friendly hotel when you booked, the dogs (huskies) Can go where the like it's their home) My friend had to carry his dog past them. Room was nice and clean as was the bathroom. We had arrived late as the traffic was awful, we had phoned pryer to. This and explained. When we came down from putting our bags away. We were asked if we wanted a drink in the bar, we declined and asked if we could go through to dining room. We where then told the restaurant closed at 7.pm and we had 5 minute"s to order our (pre_booked). Meal. ???? Ordered a tagliatelle in a creamy mushroom, courgette and cognac sauce My friend had a beefburger that was so small that you. Wondered if. They had hardly enough meat left to make it, they must have been running low on potatoes too as he only had about 7or8 chips. Getting. Back to my meal----- well what can I say? They must have run out of courgettes too. As I didn't have any. The thing I couldn't work out is why there was no cognac in my meal? it's not as though there isn't a well. Stocked bar. I mean they state to have a well stocked. Bar with hundreds of different "gins" and spirits. Breakfast was nothing special, 1 piece of strange tasting bacon,1 sausage (ok) mushrooms nice, egg good beans in a tiny dolls house size pot. But they tasted nice ( I wonder if their hienz?)"

Castle Cottage Inn ★★★
"The Castle Cottage Inn is the gold standard for bed and breakfasts. Friendly, personalized service from owners Pattra and Darryl. Perfect location adjacent to Harlech Castle. Nearby shops. Beautiful views. Attention to detail and thoughtful in every regard. I stayed in room #7. Loved it! Castle and sea view. Think Monet painting the cathedral @ Rouen series, and that's what you get looking out the #7 windows toward the castle and sea throughout sunrise, day, and sunset. Comforting tub and walk-in shower, heated bathroom floor and towel rack, comfy bed, robes and slippers, couch, all sorts of lighting, mini fridge, smart TV, the list goes on and on . . . . Cozy bar with a mix of guests and locals. Delicious restaurant with comprehensive menu options. If return to Harlech, I'll stay here again!"
