"The grand oriental hotel did not live up to its name. Sure, this would have been grand in the 18 or 1900’s, but its glory days are way past that - this hotel badly needs a major renovation and updated interior design. There are many things and items in this hotel that must never be reused again - they must be thrown away, never to see daylight again! Examples of such are: the ultra worn out sofa that have seen better bums, the discoloured sheets, the wooden furnishings chipping off. Jose rizal might have stayed here fashionably in the past, but the current interiors indeed look like they stayed the same from the 1800s. Alas, there is also an insect problem or infestation that the management needs to take care of. Cleanliness was an issue. To give credit to the staff, they were professional, warm, and friendly - embodying true Sri Lankan hospitality."

"Our stay at Zest Metropole was absolutely perfect. We could check in at 11.00 AM already, 3 hours before the official check in time, without asking and without extra charge. "I stayed one night in a premium city view room. The street on the restaurant side of the hotel seemed lively with a band playing, but we were on the bank side, so it was quiet at night and we slept very well. The room was spacious and clean. Breakfast is available at the downstairs restaurant for an extra charge, but there are many places around to get breakfast, so not having it included wasn't an issue at all. My phone charger type didn't match, so I tried to borrow one from the front desk, but they told me the hotel didn't have any and to buy one at Peta Market. The market is about a 10-minute walk, but I'd recommend taking a tuk-tuk if you go at night as the street can be a bit daunting to walk alone. We had dinner at the restaurant on the first floor, and the food was delicious, and the staff were very friendly. Overall, it's a hotel with good value for money."

"Even though I checked in late at night, the staff was incredibly attentive. The room was very clean, and the location was excellent – overall, it was a wonderful hotel. The only downside was that the shower didn't drain well, and it ended up flooding a bit."

"The room was clean and comfortable, and the hotel's surrounding facilities were excellent. There's a KFC right outside and a supermarket. Getting around was very convenient too; even though I didn't know my way around, the front desk staff enthusiastically helped me hail a taxi. Plus, there's a simple breakfast and free WiFi. Great value for money!"

"The air conditioning was incredibly loud, severely impacting my sleep quality. I had no choice but to turn it off every night. The bedding and towels were disgustingly dirty, covered in old stains – truly nauseating. The bathroom door design was impractical; it blocked the toilet when opened, forcing you to squeeze past or detour through the shower. This is probably why there's no door for the shower, which resulted in the entire bathroom flooding after every shower. I had to throw all the towels on the floor to soak up the water, and I assume others did the same. It felt really off-putting then using new towels to dry myself. The soundproofing was terrible. The windows and room door already offered poor insulation, and to top it off, I was assigned a connecting room. Over 5 nights, there were at least three different sets of guests next door. The last family (who were also my compatriots) were incredibly loud at 2 or 3 AM, talking loudly, video calling, and even singing. I called room service to ask them to intervene, but it only stayed quiet for about 5 minutes before they started again. I just had to endure it, waiting until I was utterly exhausted before I could finally fall asleep. Aside from the decent service, and the cheap price, there's nothing good about this place."

"Facilities: It's an old hotel, but well-maintained, and the pool is quite nice. Cleanliness: Clean and tidy. Environment: Strong Christmas atmosphere, and there's always live performances in the lobby, which is amazing! In the morning after breakfast, I saw a young man playing the piano, and in the evening, there was a band playing. It was a great experience. Service: The doormen were all very welcoming. Five-star standard service!"
