"Breakfast is not really included as such. Only the continental buffet. This is cereal, fruits, cereal bars, baked items and a large selection of cakes, including mince pies, which was odd for breakfast. The hot breakfast requires a surcharge to be paid, something I’ve never experienced before. The full English would be best described as part English breakfast, with no sausages, tomatoes, or mushrooms included which is a bit of an insult when you’re paying a surcharge. I can’t fault the service, or anything else, but this felt a bit naughty to be doing."

"Only gave a 3 because the staff were nice. It's sad I didn't post a good review on my previous visits as they are normally very good. As for this time... they were not especially busy but tried to make out they were fully booked. Hardly any food was coming out of the kitchen. We had to wait an hour for our food after 3 rounds of drinks and asking when the food would arrive. When it did it was obvious the roast dinner was microwaved. Chewy meat, 1 carrot, one parsnip and a flat yorkshire pud that would have been fine if it said pancake. As for the tandoori chicken... a small leg of roast chicken with less meat than a small breast of... sort of 2 bites and it was gone but the worst bit was it was plain chicken with a splash of non indian seasoning added to the skin that offered no taste at all. Also asked for no veg beyond the chips so they added minted onions which I can't have. A half reasonable portion of chips would have done rather than an amount you could almost count on one hand. Could you spare them? And they have put their prices up. They were nice enough when we complained but honestly tried to convince me the chicken was marinaded. Only if the marinade was water. I have been to enough indian restaurants to know what tandoori chicken looks and tastes like. Admittedly they offered a curry sauce to go with it which was okay but I had eaten all the chips and had cold chicken by the time it turned up. I didn't want to send it back as I figured I would be waiting another hour for it. We won't be back anytime soon. One piece of advice. If you have a chef or kitchen problem, just be honest about it and we can go elsewhere. Don't make people wait an hour when you aren't actually that busy and then provide poor value and poor food and try and convince the customer it's something it's not. You only hurt your own reputation and loose customers."

"We had a very strangely shaped room in the annexe. I can’t help feeling it could have been partitioned better. That said, it was very comfortable and the velux window above the bed allowed a nice flow of fresh air ion a very muggy night. An extractor fan from the kitchen or laundry below was rather noisy in the evening, as was the traffic on the road outside, but I think g is reasonable to expect a bit of noise in a pub B&b so I’m not complaining. The staff were very friendly and welcoming. The restaurant is good, with a compact but well varied menu, in which almost all items could be made gluten free. However I did feel that it is marketed toward the more horizontally and gravitationally challenged sector of the populace as the portions were about twice the size that I would normally expect, but everything we had was nicely prepared and presented. Breakfast in the morning included the novelty of Staffordshire oatcakes, which are very similar to fried parathas. The pub is in a beautiful situation by the river Dove, with some nice public footpath walks leading from it. The garden is surrounded by some beautiful mature trees - weeping willow, ash, sycamore - but no oak! We really enjoyed our stay."

"I do not like leaving negative feedback but we had an almost fawlty towers like experience here. The absolute & only saving grace was the staff. Every single member of staff was courteous, pleasant & welcoming. The girl on breakfast duty had to help us with a problem with the shower … she was running the show as other staff off or sick & the pub closes on Mondays. She was brilliant & turned out a very good & hearty breakfast for us. The evening food we had was quite good ( Sunday roast) but my husband felt that the meat portions were very small but all else was ok. We were put in the family room so much was not to our taste ( rabbits on the bedding & cuddly toys) but because of a serious plumbing problem affecting the other rooms we had no choice. The bathroom is seriously outdated & was not clean enough. It’s obvious that this place has massive potential & the setting is beautiful with a glorious Italian style church right next door to the pub in this charming area. I understand that the new owners haven’t been in there long & have encountered quite a few problems & l do hope they manage to pull everything together."

The Royal Oak ★★★
"We visited for a Sunday meal and, unfortunately, the experience was disappointing overall. The interior felt quite run-down and not particularly clean, giving the impression that the focus is more on fitting in as many guests as possible rather than creating a comfortable dining environment. While the service itself was good, the atmosphere was far from relaxing. The restaurant was very noisy due to several large parties, making it difficult to have a conversation. Food arrived quickly, but the quality didn’t match expectations. Our starter was overcooked, though still just about acceptable. The main courses, both beef, were also overcooked and quite dry, despite being covered in gravy. Overall, the food lacked flavour and was fairly underwhelming. It was edible, but not enjoyable. The condition of the facilities reflected the rest of the venue. The ladies’ toilets were in need of repair, with a broken toilet roll holder and a general sense of neglect. Overall, the place could benefit from significant attention and improvement. Unfortunately, it’s not somewhere I would return to."
