Kunming is a city that simply feels good.
Nestled at an altitude of about 1900 meters, its climate is like spring year-round, earning it the nickname ”Spring City.” Even in late May, with bright sunshine during the day and a gentle breeze in the mornings and evenings, strolling through the streets is incredibly pleasant.
If it's your first time in Kunming, one of my top recommendations is Cuihu Park (Green Lake Park).
Cuihu isn't huge, but its water is crystal clear, and it's shaded by lush trees. Walking along the lake, you'll see elderly folks exercising, locals singing and dancing, and people simply lounging in the sun. There's no entrance fee, making it perfect for a leisurely stroll to soak in the Kunming way of life.
However, it's worth noting that many visitors come for the seagulls. In fact, from around November to March each year, red-billed gulls from Siberia flock to Kunming for the winter. By May, they've already begun their journey back north, so you're unlikely to see any seagulls at Cuihu. If seeing the gulls is your main goal, I'd suggest visiting in winter.
Even without the gulls, Cuihu is still well worth a visit.
The blooming flowers along the lake, the quaint pavilions and ancient structures, and the rich cultural atmosphere all add to its charm. Especially in the evening, with the sunset reflecting on the lake and a gentle breeze, it takes on a truly unique and beautiful ambiance.
For travel planning, I recommend combining Cuihu Park and Yunnan University into one day. These three attractions are very close to each other and easily reachable on foot. Start your morning at Cuihu, enjoy some Yunnan rice noodles or 'steam pot chicken' for lunch, then spend the afternoon visiting the Yunnan Military Academy and Yunnan University. It's a perfect day trip.
If you have more time, you could also head to Nanqiang Street or Dounan Flower Market in the evening. Dounan Flower Market, in particular, is one of Asia's largest flower trading markets, and the incredibly affordable prices of various flowers are a pleasant surprise, making it definitely worth seeing.
Kunming might not boast breathtaking grand landscapes, but it possesses a special charm. The sky is incredibly blue here, there are abundant flowers, and life moves at a leisurely pace. It doesn't feel like a tourist city eager to show off; instead, it's more like a gentle old friend, quietly accompanying you on walks, for tea, and soaking up the sun.
And this comfort, more often than not, is far more memorable than any grand spectacle.

I highly recommend Hilton Garden Inn to pet parents traveling with their furry friends. I stayed at two Hilton Garden Inn locations during this trip: Kunming Panlong and Dali Erhai.
1. The hotel's location is convenient for walking and potty breaks for dogs. Kunming Panlong has a small green space nearby, and Dali Erhai is right across the street from Erhaiyue Wetland Park, where there are plenty of other dogs to play with. Both hotels are in central locations, making them a moderate distance from various city attractions.
2. The rooms are designed like short-term apartments, offering enough space for medium to large dogs to move around and play simple games. There's also a good variety of room types, making it easy for families to arrange their stay.
3. The staff is incredibly pet-friendly. They prepared toy and treat gifts for our dog, and our dog absolutely loved the big radish and small radish toys!
4. For dogs who eat fresh food, both hotels are located near places where you can buy fresh vegetables and meat. You can also borrow a rice cooker from the hotel to cook the food for your dog. The large refrigerator in the room also allows for storing plenty of ingredients and any medications that need refrigeration.
5. The one-time cleaning fee of 200 RMB is reasonable, and there's also convenient parking available, which is a big plus for those who drive themselves. 👍
I really enjoyed my stay here and it became one of my preferred places in Kunming.
The atmosphere is calm and comfortable. Staff were helpful and easy to communicate with. The room itself is spacious and practical, with a fridge, washing machine and balcony area which makes a big difference for longer stays.
Location is very convenient near shopping areas and transport links.
The bathroom is functional but slightly older, and cleaning is not daily, so that’s worth noting for longer stays. However, overall cleanliness was good.
If I were returning to Kunming, I would happily stay here again.
Scoring note:

The entire room definitely shows its age. For my 9-night, 10-day trip to Kunming, I chose this as my first stop. Let me start with the positives: The location is excellent, and the service is incredibly attentive. The front desk even proactively upgraded my room, which was a huge plus. The room itself was also clean and tidy. However, the one major drawback is the hotel's infrastructure, particularly the bed. It was really uncomfortable to sleep on; I couldn't get used to it even after two nights. Stepping out of the room onto the 6th floor, the air quality felt much better than inside the room.
We booked a twin room for our family trip with kids. The two beds could be pushed together, and they also provided bed rails, which was a great service.
The air conditioning was a bit too strong. It got cold with the AC on, but a little warm with it off, so I had to get up in the middle of the night to turn it off every day. It would be great if it had smart control.
The trash cans in the room and bathroom were a bit small. With more trash, things would easily fall out, making it harder for housekeeping to clean.
There was a slight, subtle hum from the refrigerator, but it was only noticeable late at night when it was quiet. This might be a minor issue for light sleepers, but it's not a big deal.
There are two elevators. One is a dedicated elevator, but the card reader wasn't very sensitive and a bit tricky to use. The other stops on all floors, which meant more people, but overall, it was still very convenient and fast.
The hotel is right in the city center, very close to the subway station. There are plenty of restaurants and shops nearby, and lots of pharmacies too. I'll definitely stay at this hotel again next time I visit. Highly recommended!

My stay here exceeded expectations! The hotel's location is excellent, just a 5-minute walk to the subway station, with plenty of restaurants and convenience stores nearby. In the evenings, it's lovely to take a stroll and enjoy the city nightscape – super convenient.
The front desk staff were professional and efficient, even offering a complimentary room upgrade during check-in. The bathroom's wet/dry separation was well-designed, and the water pressure was great. The toiletries were also high quality.
The breakfast selection was extensive.
Check-out was quick and easy, and the front desk even asked for my feedback, showing how much the hotel values guest opinions. It's excellent value for money, and I'd definitely choose to stay here again the next time I visit this city!

The hotel's environment is excellent. This was my first time in Kunming, and the new hotel has great facilities and comfortable beds – I especially loved the pillows! The breakfast included local specialty rice noodles, which were quite tasty. Last night, I had an important remote video conference, and the owner even took me to the hotel's meeting room. The gym was right next door, so after the meeting, I went for a quick workout, which was a great experience! For this price, it really has everything you need. The laundry room is also good. The value for money here is so much better than in Shenzhen. Kunming left a great impression on me.
Oh, and I really liked the rooftop design – it has ancient-style pavilions and lotus flowers. Kunming Plaza is nearby, and the night view is also lovely.

Facilities: The hotel is very new, and getting it for around 600 during the peak summer holiday season is incredible value for money! It shares a gym, pool, and Chinese restaurant with the Shangri-La next door, which costs 2500.
Service: There's a doorman to open doors and help with luggage, truly a five-star setup. I'll definitely prioritize staying here again next time I'm in Kunming.
This isn't my first time staying at this hotel, and it's definitely a top choice in Kunming. It's located near the Donghua Farmers Market, making it super convenient for getting to the zoo or the city center. The environment is excellent, the staff are all incredibly friendly, and the daily housekeeping is superb. Last time I didn't try their breakfast, but this time I did and it completely blew me away. As someone born and raised in Kunming, I can guarantee their braised pork rice noodles/noodles are the most authentic in the whole city!

The environment is very good, the sanitation is also very clean, the accommodation is convenient The service attitude is very good and there are disposable towels, and the care is very thoughtful
This hotel is uniquely located within an expo park right next to the World Expo site, which is quite rare. The environment is exceptionally quiet and comfortable, completely free from street noise, allowing both my parents and children to rest wonderfully. I saw online that it was a newly opened hotel and was initially a bit worried, but there was absolutely no strange odor, so we felt very at ease staying here. Shopping is also very convenient nearby, with a commercial street and a mall not far away. It's quite easy to take my parents and children to the Safari Park and the World Expo from here. We'll definitely choose this place again next time we visit.
I really think this is the most cost-effective hotel I stayed in Kunming. The room is very clean. The bathroom is well separated into wet and dry areas. It is also very clean and has no odor. There are disposable toilet covers. It is about 1 km walk from the subway station. Anyway, there is nothing else to say. This price is really suitable for college students like us to stay
The location is excellent, the subway station downstairs is directly connected to the airport, the first choice for the transfer station for the transfer plane, the room is 50 square meters, very spacious, clean and tidy, the floor is high and the view is good, I want to go to Nanping Street and walk a few hundred meters.
The front desk staff were super friendly and helpful. The room was clean, and the facilities were great. It's really convenient for getting around to nearby attractions. They even upgraded my room for free and went out of their way to help with parking. Breakfast was just okay, but it was enough to fill me up.
The hotel service was excellent, and the facilities were complete. The location is great, and it's very clean. The hotel manager was especially helpful, even serving us in the breakfast restaurant. Highly recommended, the service is truly outstanding!
Facilities: Well-equipped.
Hygiene: Clean and tidy. The service was excellent, and the front desk staff were always helpful, answering all our questions and solving any issues we had. This made our trip much more convenient and made us feel right at home.
Hotel location is very good to find. Clean. The front desk clerk was very welcoming and had free parking. There is also a free Dahongpao to drink at the hotel. Tea snacks are available. very good. Come back next time.
