This hotel is super close to Hirayu Onsen bus station, just a few minutes' walk away. It's a pretty big place. After checking in, you swap your shoes for slippers, and you can wear the provided yukata (Japanese robes) throughout the entire hot spring hotel. To avoid lugging our luggage up and down, we opted for a slightly more expensive Western-style standard room in the main building. They have an outdoor onsen, and the men's and women's baths switch daily. After a relaxing soak, there's free ice cream available. We had dinner and breakfast included, both buffet style, but the taste was just so-so.

🌿 A Secluded Paradise in Okuhida Mountains
The moment I stepped into Okuhida Sakurakan, I was captivated by its authentic old folk-house architectural style and the rich scent of wood. The hotel's overall design blends perfectly with the surrounding natural landscape, making it feel like staying in an exquisite forest museum. The rooms are spacious and full of Zen, with magnificent views of the Northern Alps outside the window, beautiful in every season.
♨️ Ultimate Hot Spring Experience
The onsen experience here is simply perfect. Besides the public bath, the hotel's **private open-air baths (kashikiri onsen)** offer a truly ritualistic experience. Soaking in the hot springs surrounded by snow-capped mountains and forests is both private and romantic. I especially recommend a morning soak, breathing in the crisp mountain air and feeling the warmth of the spring water—it's a complete rejuvenation for body and soul.
🥩 A Gastronomic Feast
The Hida beef dinner banquet was astonishing; the meat was tender and melted in my mouth, and every dish was exquisitely presented like a work of art. The hotel's signature offerings—the complimentary late-night 'Yonaki' ramen and the free Hida milk or ice cream after a bath—truly highlight the delicate and warm Japanese hospitality.

Our room was spacious and presented with a private onsen of which we can use any time at our convenience. Because of that, hardly anyone uses the shared private onsen, though the view there is better than that in our rooms. Also, there was no elevator at the hotel, so we had to carry our luggages up and down the stairs, thankfully the hotel only has 2 levels, and the hotel staff were nice enough to help us carry our luggages up into our rooms.
Free parking is available, which is essential as the hotel is not situated nearby any public transport. But it is within 15 to 30 min drive to nearby attractions.
The hotel was quite strict on the meal times as dinner and breakfast are served at 6pm and 8am sharp respectively. We arrived the hotel late on our first night (around 7pm) and almost missed our dinner (and almost got our room cancelled). We were served hida beef in different cooking style at dinner for both nights of our stay, one steamed and one grilled. Both tasted delicious!
All the staff were very friendly and always wearing a grin on their faces. Overall we had a pleasant stay.

The service, facilities, and environment are all excellent, and the surroundings are beautiful, with a breathtaking view at every turn. The private onsen is completely free. The hotel also provides small electric lights, allowing you to enjoy the nightlife. The water is also excellent, leaving your skin with a natural, reflective effect. However, the food was mediocre. I paid extra for the A5 Hida, but only got one slice. The local cuisine for breakfast was inedible. Perhaps I'm not used to eating on my own. I recommend bringing some food; it's simply not good.

Stayed in the most satisfying snow hot spring hotel in my life♨️
If you depart from Takayama, the best time is 13:40 in the afternoon, take HO41, and the hotel is opposite the station (this is the most important reason why I chose the hotel, no need to walk a lot)
Bath time: 3 pm to 9 am the next day, after 9 am is cleaning time, private bath does not require reservations, outdoor family bath is also first come first served!
The hotel is super clean, and the kaiseki cuisine in the evening is also delicious! Full score recommendation👍
Existing reservations can also get the prefectural discount coupon by changing the reservation details after July 26.

My partner and I really enjoyed the 2 nights stay here. The hosts were very friendly, even though they cannot speak English very well, they made effort to make the guests feel like home. I did find the water in the private hot springs is too hot to enjoy, but i really like the decoration and the setting of the public bath. Breakfast and dinner were very beautiful and tasty, I particularly like the tofu soup in breakfast.

Traditional Japanese hot spring hotel, booked a room with private bath, the room does not have a separate bathroom, there was a shower next to the private bath on the balcony, I felt that I could not take a shower and would freeze to death, so I had to go to the big bath to take a shower~
The service was very thoughtful, very traditional Japanese feeling, but English was not very good, this is also very traditional Japanese hahaha.
The food was very delicious. I have been to Japan so many times, and I can say that this is the best one-night-two-meals meal. It is exquisite and lasts until the next day hahaha
The hot spring is still very comfortable, but the only drawback is that there is not much good scenery, because it is a hot spring hotel on the roadside, it is blocked by a fence, and the open-air bath can only look at the sky, but the stars are very bright, it is still very good.
Overall, it is worth the money, recommended!
PS. People call it Yamanogojuku, not Inoyama Hat😹

Our stay at Ryokan Gizan was a truly memorable experience. This is a traditionally built and decorated Japanese ryokan, with tatami floors, sliding doors, and an authentic atmosphere that makes you feel fully immersed in Japanese culture. It’s definitely a “must-visit” if you’re looking to experience traditional Japanese accommodation — even a short stay of 2–3 nights is enough to make it special.
The ryokan is quite old, which actually adds to its authentic charm, though it might feel a bit less comfortable for more demanding guests. That said, it’s very well maintained and everything is clean and thoughtfully arranged.
The onsen facilities were excellent — one public bath and four private ones that you can use freely. After long days of exploring, it was a real treat.
We highly recommend booking with the traditional dinner included. The meals were a highlight: we had Yakiniku the first night and Shabu-shabu the second, both featuring fresh, generous portions of delicious food. Breakfast was a traditional Japanese set — beautifully presented and made with care, though not quite to our personal taste.
The location is stunning — surrounded by mountains, rivers, and blossoming trees. It feels peaceful and remote. Just note that amenities like ATMs or grocery stores are limited nearby. However, it’s well connected by bus (just a 3-minute walk from the ryokan), which can take you to Kamikochi or the terminals at Takayama and Hirayu Onsen. Buses run about once an hour, so it’s quite manageable.
Overall, a fantastic stay — relaxing, unique, and highly recommended for anyone looking to experience a more traditional and scenic side of Japan.

We arrived before 15.00 the check-in time hence there really was nobody at front desk until it's 15.00. Did some walking and dragging luggage (approx. 5-10 min) from bus terminal to/from hotel (luckily, my luggage's wheel survive the road). The hotel's onsen are free to use as long as it's vacant and really private for us only (because you can locked the door). Our room on 3rd floor was Japanese style with tatami, futon, short-legged table, teapot for green tea. The room's window has great view to mountains and cool, clean air.

Honestly, I didn’t read before booking as there wasn’t much info. No room pics etc. Had 2 adults 2 young children. When we arrived, we were shocked as it was old and there wasn’t a private bathroom. However, the owner was really welcoming. She brought us to our room and it was this very traditional tatami room (which we never stayed in before). There was also this lovely private onsen, very suitable for us as we are very conservative. We only had an issue with the shared bath but that’s just us. It was really clean and everyone was friendly.
Had a really good sleep, plenty of stars in the sky at night, 10mins to Shinhotaka ropeway (be there EARLY pls)
Breakfast starts at 730. Be there at 730. Very traditional breakfast (to us at least), had to google how to eat but was a real good experience!

Amazing
DDavid BuffyMeatyAwesome hotel located just 5-10mins walk behind FamilyMart ie opposite the TAKAYAMA NOHI Bus Stn & JR. The check in was easy & front desk staff was very professional ensuring the process was easy & swift! The hotel has a great & large Hot Spring and outdoor Rotenburo Onsen they’re segregated Men-Women. The onsen lobby has large lounge space to relax, free ice cream and a large full length glass window overlooking you may sit on chairs & coin operated massage chairs enjoying the beautiful town and fabulous snow capped mountains at the edge of the town in the day & sunrise!!
The morning Japanese breakfast options are plentiful, staffs are helpful and friendly too! To walk to the Old Houses District perhaps only take 15mins leisure walk but gets really quiet & dark by 6PM in March!
GGuest UserThis hotel is super convenient for solo travelers, being close to both the train and bus stations. The room was incredibly clean and surprisingly spacious for a standard room in Japan – we could easily fit two large suitcases! The hotel's location is also great, close to popular attractions and restaurants.
AAnonymous UserSuper comfortable for solo traveler. The room is booked actually able to accommodate 2 person. Just a few minutes walk from Takayama station. For light sleeper be mindful of rambling sound of train. Basically Takayama is a small town walking seems to be the ideal way to tourist spots. Overall I enjoyed my stay at the hotel.
ZzizibehappyArriving in Takayama by highway bus, I chose to stay at the same Residence Hotel as my previous visit. It's incredibly convenient, located just a left turn from the Nohi Bus Terminal exit, making it zero distance from both the bus and JR stations. The luxury suite is huge, featuring a balcony, four beds, and a fully equipped kitchen with pots, pans, a microwave, and a large refrigerator. The washing machine with a dryer was an absolute lifesaver. Even better, all the drinks in the fridge were complimentary, including two 2L bottles of mineral water, beer, sake, green tea, and cola. Basic condiments like salt, soy sauce, pepper, and cooking oil were also provided. There's a supermarket right next door, perfect for buying Hida beef and cooking up a feast.
GGuest UserThe location is the best value adding item to this hotel, they only offered limited room cleaning so it may take a while to adjust if you are international travellers. Having the microwave and washing machine in the room is another key advantage of this hotel, overall I will say this is one of the best options in Takayama. Oh they also have free water machines every floor so you can save up buying bottles from convenient stores.
SSuzhiなrenEvery year at the end of the year, I visit Takayama, mainly to see the snow scenery in Shirakawa-go, and this hotel has pretty much become my go-to choice. What I love most is the service; the staff are all incredibly warm and attentive, making for a very comfortable stay. Plus, you can book a private onsen, which is wonderfully quiet and relaxing – a real highlight of the trip. Last year, the room I stayed in had a beautiful Japanese tatami area, which really added to the traditional Japanese ambiance. It's a shame I couldn't book that room type this time; it seems they no longer have it, which is a bit disappointing. Nevertheless, the overall experience was still excellent, and I'll likely choose to stay here again next time I'm in Takayama.
SSuperkidGreat stay overall, but the check-in experience wasn’t pleasant. The female staff was rude when informing me that parking is only available from 2pm and that I couldn’t park earlier, or even drop off my luggage. I have to park somewhere else instead.
GGuest UserThe hotel room was spacious and clean. They offered complimentary drinks upon arrival in the afternoon, including free beer! After a relaxing hot spring bath, there were free cold drinks available. The surrounding area is lovely, and it's just a short walk to the attractions. Getting to Takayama Station was also super convenient.
GGuest UserRoom is small, typical Japan budget hotel. They only got 2 floors with no elevator, so we’re lucky that our room in first floor. Didn’t manage to try their free supper but they do have free supper.
Location is not close to train station buy they have shuttle which goes from and to hotel quite often.
There’s one family mart across the hotel which is quite helpful because there’s no other restaurant nearby!
南南方澳配速員The hotel is in an excellent location with great amenities nearby. It's just a bridge away from Miyagawa Morning Market and very close to the old town of Takayama. During my two-day stay, all the other guests I encountered were European, and I was the only Asian person in the entire backpacker room, which was a very unique experience.
