"This guesthouse seems to be run by Chinese owners, which is nice. My room was right by the entrance. After checking in at the front desk, I couldn't find it until I turned around... it felt a bit like sleeping in a guardhouse. The soundproofing isn't great either. Because of its peculiar location, it gets very noisy in the mornings. And the room next door seems to be a staff office, which also generates a lot of noise. However, the room was warm and clean, perfect for a night's sleep, and the price was excellent. The only downside is that it didn't have a private bathroom. The common areas were clean and there was even coffee available, which was a pleasant touch."

Hotels in Toya, Hakodate, and Noboribetsu, all costing over 3K, didn't respond. Grand Park Otaru was by far the most proactive, even arranging a complimentary cake for us. Highly recommend! "The hotel front desk are friendly and easy to communicate with English. The room is spaces and my room's window view is Otaru Canal. Very beautiful winter view. The hotel located about 15 minutes walking distance to The Otaru Steam Clock location and about or less than 10 minutes from the JR station. The check in time is 3pm but we reached before that the hotel also let us check in earlier. Overall I am happy with this hotel."
