Hotel Izgrev Spa & Aquapark ★★★★

"A very mixed experience. We visited as a family of 5, staying in two adjacent (but not adjoining) rooms. The beds were comfortable enough and the room was a pleasant temperature, but the quality of fixtures and fittings was questionable, e.g. broken shower head, ill fitting electrical fixtures. There were noises from water pipes which interrupted my wife's sleep, and disturbed me when I was trying to get to sleep. You are prohibited from taking food up to rooms, but they do provide room service (at +50% cost). The lobby bar was not open our entire visit, which seems strange. The beach bar and pool bar stop serving food at 5:30pm, main dining room doesn't open until 7pm. Evening buffet was very limited, the a la carte menu is good, but no children's potions and we were struggling by the end of our one week stay - the kids just lived off pizza twice per day. The aquapark is brilliant - one of the best I've been to. Some other reviews note the lack of lifeguards, which is only partially true - the behaviour is self regulating so if you want to go down headfirst you pretty much can. There were, however, first-aiders distributed around the park and staff everywhere if you needed anything. They just weren't blowing their whistles all the time, and let the kids explore their own boundaries on the more adventurous slides. Lake Ochrid is beautiful, and during the day you can walk through the Monastery of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary to get to the small village of Kališta (Kalishta), which has a couple of restaurants. Unfortunately the monastery shuts in the evening, so you can't stay too late - though there didn't seem to be much nightlife anyway. The town of Ochrid is beautiful, but a taxi ride away so it was really a day-trip to go there. There was no entertainment in the hotel in the evening, we were prepared for that so had packed tablets/laptops for evening entertainment - they were very much needed, as there wasn't even a bar open in the evening to sit in. On the whole, I'd say definitely visit Lake Ochrid but stay in the town and make a day-trip to the Aquapark, not the other way round."

"The location of this hotel is perfect and the view from the balcony from our bedroom was great, sitting watching the sunset was amazing. This hotel is still under construction and I think once it is complete it will be even better. A suggestion would be in the bathroom to have some form of shower curtain and also somewhere for the shower hose to hang to have a shower as in the bathroom you just had to hold it, plus water went everywhere. The owner is very friendly and welcoming and we loved hearing how it was originally his family home."

"I enjoyed my recent week's stay here. It's far enough back from the lakeside that you miss a lot of the late noise, while being close enough that you can very quickly walk to it. There's also a minimarket close by, as well as the centre and old town both being within very easy walking distance. While you don't get a lakeside view, the actual view from my rear-balcony still had a distant mountain and well-kept lawns, and the walk to see lakeside is quick as noted. I had the double room with balcony which was spacious enough for me, clean and felt comfortable. You should be aware that if you're on bed and breakfast you may find the 9am start time for breakfast at The Lion is quite late compared to some of the other local hotels, however when you get there the food options and service for breakfast is fantastic. And if you aren't staying for the breakfast it doesn't matter! The owners were also very polite and happy to help with queries, I understand they can also arrange local excurisons although I didn't use this facility as I'd booked mine through Tui. It felt relaxing and homely staying here."

"We are a Norwegian well travelled couple in our mid-50s who stayed at Vila Europa for a week, and it turned out to be a truly wonderful holiday for us. Despite the road running right past it, the location is remarkably peaceful. It’s a small boutique hotel with just 12 rooms, and the service is fantastic. Housekeeping came every day. The hotel’s private beach is just across the road, equipped with high-quality sun loungers and parasols. This little beach offers the same sense of calm and relaxation as the hotel itself, with a subtle touch of understated exclusivity. The food is outstanding too, and the restaurant service matches it. Its popularity and quality are evident from the fact that it’s well attended by guests staying elsewhere, not just hotel guests. If you’d like to visit the town of Ohrid, it’s easily reached by local minibus, which runs every half hour and takes just 15 minutes. We had an incredible week here and were wonderfully looked after, in beautiful, tranquil surroundings. For the record, we have no connection to the owners or staff, and we are not being paid or compensated in any way for this review — these are simply our honest impressions as guests. In short: Vila Europa is a little paradise by Ohrid, and we recommend it as warmly as possible."

"This is a beautiful and most artistic hotel with a lovely garden. We had a beautiful room , which was most spacious. The staff was not particularly friendly, which was completely out of character for all my hotels in Albania. Maybe they didn't speak much English and that was a problem. Dinner was very good as were the breakfasts"
