At dawn, the rising crimson sun softly tints the snow-covered slopes of Mount Fuji with hues of golden red. Its reflection dances upon the shimmering surface of Lake Yamanaka, creating the breathtaking sight known as the “Double Red Fuji”—a miraculous moment when heaven and earth mirror each other in radiant harmony. It is a masterpiece crafted wholly by nature, inspiring awe with its quiet beauty. Our hotel is located just over ten meters from the lakeshore. Within a few seconds’ walk, you can reach the water’s edge and experience these magnificent, fleeting scenes with ease. Fujikokusai Kaikan Hotel is a villa-style retreat situated just across Lakeside Avenue, moments away from Lake Yamanaka. All guest rooms are equipped with air conditioning and heating, a smart TV, hair dryer, and electric kettle. The bathroom area features a separate toilet, bath, and vanity. Warm interiors combining carpet and tatami offer the comfort of both Japanese and Western styles.

"We had an absolutely wonderful stay and would happily give this hotel 5 stars! From the very beginning, the staff were incredibly accommodating and responsive. They kindly arranged to pick us up from Gotemba Premium Outlets, which made everything so convenient for us. After attending the beautiful Yamanakako Ice Lantern Festival, we made a last-minute request for dinner. Despite the short notice, they thoughtfully prepared a delicious shabu-shabu meal for us. They even gave us complimentary cookies because our moms were very hungry after the festival. It was such a sweet and caring gesture that we truly appreciated. The hotel itself is spacious, clean, and wonderfully warm, making it the perfect place to relax after being out in the cold. We felt comfortable, cared for, and genuinely welcomed throughout our stay. Highly recommended for their exceptional hospitality. We would definitely love to come back!"

"The room was spacious and very comfortable. We opted for the private hot spring, which was easy to book at the front desk for JPY 2200. Breakfast was Japanese style, with dishes prepared in advance based on room number, and the dining experience was excellent. The price was reasonable for the time of year, and the location is super convenient, just an 8-minute walk from Hakone-Yumoto Station. It's perfect for first-time visitors who aren't familiar with the area, and you can easily walk to dinner spots near the station without having to hike up hills. The only downside was that the front desk staff member was a bit aloof. He'd tilt his head and say 'thank you for your patronage' while looking elsewhere, which felt a bit dismissive. I hope they can improve on that!"

"The biggest advantage is probably its proximity to Yumoto Station. You don't even need to go upstairs from the second floor; just walk to the end, turn left, take the elevator down, walk forward, turn left, and you're there in two minutes. 1. I planned to explore Hakone during the day and knew I'd miss dinner, so I only booked breakfast instead of the half-board option. That turned out to be a great decision. I definitely got back to Yumoto after dinner service had ended. The breakfast looked beautiful in photos, but it was hard to eat. There wasn't really anything appealing; just a bunch of miscellaneous small dishes and pickles. 2. The private onsen needs to be booked in advance, but it was just okay. 3. If you have a lot of luggage, staying in Yumoto is more convenient for check-in, and there are other restaurants open at night. If you're traveling light in Hakone, I'd probably choose Gora, book dinner at the hotel, and explore the various museums around Gora. For a day trip, you don't need to see everything; just pick one or two places you like."

"Positives 1. Large spacious and clean room. Certainly an upgrade from the smaller Tokyo city rooms we were in. 2. The medicinal tea bar was a hit with our group and an interesting touch to the hotel. 3. The public baths (onsen) were well maintained and clean. 4. The hotel provides yukata robes that you can change into. 5. Breakfast and dinner were decent and necessary judging by the limited number of eateries in the area. There is Gora Brewery just behind the hotel and a Daily Yamazaki convenience store just 1 min walk. 6. You can get to Gora Park in 1 min. Tips to get from Gora station to hotel and vice versa 1. Walking. The steep slope is really not for the faint hearted. 2. When you get off at Gora, hop onto the Tozan line from Gora and get off at Koen Shimo (1 stop). It is covered if you buy the Hakone Free Pass. From Koen Shimo, it is a straight walk to the hotel. Much easier than climbing the slope. 3. Hotel shuttle. From Gora station exit, turn right and you will see an underpass. Go through it and this is where the shuttle picks / drops. We didn’t manage to find out how to get the shuttle from Gora station, but from the hotel - you should book the shuttle in advance as it can get full especially during check out time."

"We enjoyed the rather spacious room and the view of rolling hills. With large beds and a tatami room, it felt rather luxurious. The entire place has an 80s vibe, but good thing we liked the nostalgia it brought for us. The room was quick clean too. Only that the outside balcony and windows had a few rather large spiders and spider webs. Good thing we don't have arachnophobia. They have two locations for their onsens at different timings. So that needed some getting used to. The onsens themselves are decent enough. Getting to the place was a little tricky as we didn't know what was the best bus to hop onto. We hopped onto the bus that Google Maps indicated was the most direct, only to realise as we were boarding that that bus was not covered under the Hakone Free Pass. On hindsight, to utilise the Hakone Free Pass, one should take the bus to Yunessen, the hotel next door and walk a short distance uphill. For the price we thought it was quite worth it, especially compared to some of the other hotels nearby."

"Great experience. The staff were lovely and the area is beautiful. Rooms are very homely and comfy. We went into the onsen both nights and it was great. We also got dinner both nights at the hotel and the food was good we were impressed. Overall it felt like a very personal stay and couldn't be happier. For some of the logistics if you are wanting to do the hakone main loop. We recommend coming in from Shinjuku on the romance car, take the montain train up to Gora and then the cable car to Sounzan. We then took a roughly 10min bus from Sounzan to Yuyu. The next morning we then took the same bus back to Sounzan and caught the first 9am ropeway fo start off the loop. We managed to avoid most of the crowds and it was very convenient. Once again couldn't recommend Yuyu enough thank you for the great stay!!"

"The best place in Hakone. Everything is close by. There was an issue with the free shuttle upon check-in, but this is due to the fact that you can't contact the hotel directly, only through Trip.com support. We made the most of it upon check-out. In the room we were assigned, we discovered in the evening that there was no hot water. The next day, we were moved to another room. The onsen are wonderful – there are communal ones, which we went in the evening and were alone in, and there are private ones – they are small and more like jacuzzis. We liked the communal ones better. They provide yukatas and a basket – very convenient for the baths. The Japanese-style breakfasts are unusual. Alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks are available almost all day, and coffee machines are located on all floors and are available at any time. There is a grocery store nearby. There are many good restaurants near the station."

"We checked in after 9 PM, and the hotel receptionist had someone help us with the check-in. The hotel's main onsen (hot spring) is closed until 10 PM, but we could still use the small underground bathroom next door afterwards. Although it's small, it was more than enough for the four of us, and the onsen water was excellent; we felt very comfortable afterward. The hotel room was also nice; it was spacious, next to a small river, and had a small balcony—I thought it was great. My friend said they'd stay here again next time. Note that in addition to the hotel room rate, there's an onsen tax in Hakone, payable for both overnight and non-overnight stays, calculated based on the room rate, but it's not expensive."

"This is a wonderful place nestled in the forest. The hot springs have both indoor and outdoor baths, and the best part is they're private, so families or friends can relax and enjoy without worrying about other guests. The ryokan staff were all incredibly kind, making it feel just like home. (They offer Japanese, Chinese, and English services, so I think international guests can stay here comfortably.)"

"This hotel is a paradise in the mountains of Hakone! Traditional style of the rooms - it feels like you are living in a Japanese family. We were prepared a traditional dinner, which was served in our room. It was very tasty and varied! The hotel has 3 onsen: 2 - private, 1 - public. We visited only the private ones (you need to book a time in advance at the reception upon check-in, the visit time is 30 minutes). It was wonderful! The hotel also provides a transfer from and to the nearest train stations. The rooms are clean, cozy, we slept on tatami under soft blankets. The hotel has a relax room. With massage chairs and a very quiet atmosphere. We stayed in this room after visiting the onsen and got great relaxation. And you are also given national clothes for rest and sleep. It is very beautiful and cute. Breakfasts were also in kaiseki style - varied and unusual. The hotel staff is very kind and friendly. this hotel allows tattoo baths. great experience, thank you very much! want to come back again!"

ZZuiaijinmiEnvironment: The hotel is located in the mountains, the air is very fresh, the night is very quiet, there is a small river and a small waterfall next to it. The hotel is not far from Hakone Shrine, Lake Ashi and other attractions. Service: The service is very thoughtful, breakfast is very rich, and you can also book lunch and dinner. Facilities: The overall decoration of the hotel is relatively new, and the room area is much larger than that of a hotel in Tokyo at the same price. The hotel's hot springs are indoor and outdoor, very clean, listening to the sound of the waterfall outside the hot springs is very pleasant.

Nngathant20 min uphill hike from Gora station. Or you can take cable train up hill for two stations and walk on flatland for about 8 minutes to hotel. Hotel has shuttle bus. They dropped us off on the way back. You can possibly call to pick you up at Gora station. Trip.com reservation options show you prices for one adult. It's very hard to book for 3 people to stay in one room to save money. I sent a custom request to the hotel exactly this - 3 people in one room. Trip.com charged me $270 and when I got to the hotel, they said I have to pay $300+ more for 2 more people. That was not clearly communicated to me by either Trip.com or hotel. There's a language and cultural barrier. In Japan, you pay per person - not by rooms. They scan your all passports of everyone staying - not just the person who books. With last minute notice, I had no choice but to pay more as other hotels nearby are filled up and we were very tired from 4 hours train transfers dragging our bags plus 8 minutes walk to the hotel. All in all, if trip.com room selections are not a perfect fit, I can't recommend booking this hotel. Custom messages are not recognized. Communication is lacking. You will get charged last minute without any alternatives left. For $570 a night, we could have a way better hotel in Hakone. The breakfast also wasn't memorable and you have to reserve it ahead of time. I would not come back.

GGuest UserExcellent! This onsen ryokan, operating for over 70 years, boasts 9 natural spring sources, a clear testament to its authentic *gensen kakenagashi* (free-flowing hot spring water) system. It's a short, convenient walk from the station. The bamboo grove at the entrance is exquisitely maintained, and we were welcomed by female staff in traditional attire. The gentleman who handled our check-in had a wonderfully distinctive charm. Our room was very spacious, with large floor-to-ceiling windows offering stunning views of the river and distant mountains – truly beautiful. We had booked a Japanese-style room with a semi-open-air private bath, including the 'one night, two meals' plan. Before dinner, an attendant came to greet us, and then the elaborate multi-course kaiseki meal was served. The entire dining experience lasted nearly two hours. While the ingredients were intricate and well-presented, it wasn't 'delicious' in a conventional way, though certainly not unpleasant. I suppose that's just how traditional kaiseki is, and I appreciate the experience. Afterwards, a staff member prepared our futon beds for the night. Soaking in the private onsen before bed was incredibly relaxing. The hot spring water was continuously flowing, and a notice on the wall detailed its composition, stating that only water was added to lower the temperature, along with chlorine for disinfection, and crucially, no circulation system was used. This is significant because many other onsen ryokans might offer beautiful gardens, attractive prices, and even private indoor baths, but a closer look often reveals they might just be using plain heated water or circulated onsen water. The impeccable service was almost overwhelming. Overall, I highly recommend this ryokan to anyone looking for an authentic Japanese onsen experience. If I were to visit again, I would probably opt out of the two meals package. The kaiseki was a unique experience, but once is enough, and there are many dining options on the walk from the station.

GGuest UserWe got to the hotel in the beautiful location just before 3pm and we got given a little tour of the place and then got shown to our room. The staff are very friendly and do their best to speak English. A lovely lady was in charge of our hospitality throughout our stay and she first showed us that there is a public hot spring and a private hot spring and asked us if we would like to book a time to use the private hot spring, we booked a time as we checked in but then we didn’t use it as we were happy with our private hot spring in the room. We also booked a time for dinner and they arrived at that time Promptly with A LOT of food. We also got a choice for a staple food and we chose some steak which was high quality and delicious, as well as the lobster (on the menu it said grilled prawn but a lobster is what came and it was delicious). We ordered a few beers and a bottle of wine with room service and it always came quickly and was nice and cold. The private hot spring is absolutely boiling but it’s a good experience and there’s ice water provided which helps. Breakfast came at 8.30am and it was also huge! It didn’t come with coffee but I ordered some and that was easy enough. The lady who served our food explained every dish and how to eat it and she was always extremely friendly and attentive. Would recommend!

GGuest UserTake the Shinkansen from Osaka to Odawara, then transfer to the tram to Hakone Yumoto, and then take a bus to Gora. Two people dragged their suitcases and walked uphill for 15 minutes. They were exhausted. When they arrived at the hotel, they found that they could wait for the train in Gora, and it only took 5 minutes to walk. The hotel facilities are not new, and there are not many guests, mostly Japanese tourists. The hot spring is relatively small, and the water temperature is very high. You have to come out to breathe after soaking for a while. I experienced the private bath and open-air hot spring, and there were a lot of mosquitoes. The food is OK, worthy of the price.

GGuest UserSuch a great find! Calming ryokan in a peaceful part of the mountain. Staff were all super friendly and accommodating of us as tourists who didn’t speak Japanese. Every meal was delicious and the staff took time to tell us what each little dish was and even gave us some extra mini dishes to help us try different things. They were all delicious! The onsens were also very relaxing and had everything you could need. My boyfriend and I booked the private onsen our last night and looking out over the mountain at night when it was raining was a great experience. We got the Japanese style room and it was very spacious and the tatami floors were very comfortable. View over the mountains was also terrific. The ryokan shuttle took us to the nearest two train stations (Gora or Sounzan) in the morning when we requested and picked us up at the end of the day so it was very convenient getting to the ryokan even without a car. Highly recommend this stay!!

QQinmingReally enjoyed my stay at Root Hakone. I reached a little late (around 7:30-8pm) and the walk to the hostel was a little dark (roads on Hakone aren’t that well-lit at night due to it being a forested area). So recommend to reach earlier if you’re not that comfortable with walking in the dark alone! The accommodations were comfortable, single futon bed with lockable room doors, separated by a divider. Was initially expecting just a cubbie with a curtain so this was a pleasant surprise. There’s also a direct bus nearby to Togendai Station if you’re keen to take the sightseeing cruise and ropeway. The drinks made by the staff were also wonderful, enjoyed a cassis soda, cassis oolong and fuzzy navel at a great price. The management also gave a guide of nearby recommended places to travellers too (had the best coffee at Amaze Coffee, recommendation of the staff)! Overall would come back to stay again if I’m ever back in Hakone. A downside is perhaps the lack of availability of food options at night and no near konbini so be sure to grab some supplies at the station prior to heading over.

認真評價According to the comments, the location is very far away. It is more than 10 minutes away from Hakone Tang Station. I think the road is easy to walk and the luggage will not be too tired. Walking along the river is a different scenery. The distance is not close, but it is acceptable. Compared with some closer hotels, although it is a few minutes away, it is more cost-effective. There is a private toilet inside the Japanese-style room, but there is no shower room, so you must go to the bathhouse downstairs to take a bath. The bathing position is relatively bright, the horse oil shampoo and shower gel are easy to use, and the bathing water is hot enough. It is quite comfortable overall. The only thing is that the wind power of the hair dryer is very low, and it takes a long time to blow the hair. There is no service, except for checking in to help with the luggage for a while. There was no cleaning during the period, and no door delivery when leaving, but it is acceptable because he did not charge cleaning fees and other extra fees. The door of the room feels like a joke. It is locked, but it feels a little loose. Everything is fine, but the most unsatisfactory thing is that there is no window that can be opened in the room, and the window of the room is not equipped with curtains. The window is light-transmitting when sleeping at night, and the sunlight is very dazzling when getting up in the morning, which affects sleep.

MMarinaYaThere are pros and cons to staying here! Pros: The hotel itself is lovely, with polite staff and a clean, spacious, atmospheric room offering mountain views. The public onsen is included in the price and is quite pleasant, especially if you're lucky enough to have it to yourself, as we did (we went in the morning). The hotel also has vending machines for drinks and snacks, which is very convenient since there are no stores nearby. You can arrange to have your luggage sent to the station so you don't have to carry it yourself, but unfortunately, we missed the 10 AM deadline to book this service. Cons: Unfortunately, these left a strong impression. The hotel is located in a terribly inconvenient and remote area, really out in the sticks and difficult to access. It's far from all the attractions you travel to see – we had to take a boat to get to them – and far from any establishments where you'd want to find food. Not only are these places far away, but they also close early, open late, are overpriced, and the food isn't even tasty. We couldn't call a taxi to the accommodation because you needed to link a local phone number! We initially walked with our suitcases along the road, then took a bus. The buses didn't accept our Hakone pass, a card we specifically bought for Hakone, even though buses were supposed to be included. And the price without the card was clearly inflated – 300 yen to travel uphill for 8 minutes. Since we had another individual onsen booked elsewhere (a 20-minute drive away), after that at 9 PM, we realized the buses had stopped running. There was no chance of calling or hailing a taxi, so we had to walk back to the hotel. This meant a two-hour walk along a dark mountain road, surrounded by forest, with only occasional streetlights. We tried to hitchhike, but no one stopped, not even taxis. After an hour of walking uphill (our emotions were indescribable), about the 10th car, if not more, finally stopped, and a young Japanese couple gave us a ride back to the hotel. Overall, the hotel itself is good (it was also cold at night, we used the air conditioning to warm up, but the room was large and difficult to heat; thankfully, there were extra large blankets). However, everything else regarding the location was terrible. If you plan to stay here, make sure to plan your transportation in advance.
