"On my second night, I discovered the soundproofing was terrible. There was a bunch of 'monsters' in the room next door – it sounded like people from several rooms had gathered, chatting loudly, opening and closing doors constantly, and laughing and shouting hysterically. This went on for a long time. By past midnight, I couldn't take it anymore and went down to the front desk. I was worried there wouldn't be anyone at the front desk, but there were two gentlemen on duty. They told me a sports team had checked in that day and were probably just overexcited. I told them they either needed to talk to them or I'd have to change rooms. The front desk staff went up and knocked on their door, greeting the group (signaling me to go back to my room first). Not long after, the group finally dispersed. The hotel service was still very good. Running into those ******* was just bad luck for me. Next time I encounter a similar unexpected situation, I definitely shouldn't think, 'I'll just bear it, maybe they'll finish soon.' I should go down immediately and seek help from the front desk. I'm curious, which country do those selfish, loud people who disturb others in the middle of the night come from? The hotel breakfast is complimentary and included by default with the room booking. Although simple, it's completely filling. The restaurant is also open during the day for relaxation and offers free drinks."

"I don't usually write reviews, but I absolutely loved this hotel! Transportation is great; a bus ride from Shirahama Station to Shin-Yuzaki Station takes about 20 minutes. Although the hotel is on a small hill, it's only a two-minute walk, no effort at all. Across the street are the popular Seamore and Key Noodles restaurants, and Sakinoyu is just a short walk away. Because it's built on a hill, the sea view is absolutely stunning! I could see the beautiful Pacific Ocean from my bed every day. The room was also very spacious; for this price, the room with such a large ocean view is incredibly good value. The hotel itself has an onsen (hot spring bath) and provides complimentary yukata (light cotton robe), so I could enjoy a relaxing soak every night before bed. The room service also thoughtfully provided local specialty snacks daily. It was truly the most satisfying hotel of my Shirahama trip!"

We treat you to delicious meals centered around seasonal ingredients. We have both Japanese-style and Western-style rooms available as a place of relaxation.

"Beautiful Ryokan! The room I stayed in had tatami floors and western beds. The doors slide instead of open outwards like they usually do. Toilets are relatively small, but the shower had great water pressure and temperature! However we did not shower much because.. We showered at the Onsen instead since we were there to spend time! The Onsen is tattoo-friendly as confirmed by the check in staff, and the water really had skin smoothing effects. Yukatas are available at lobby area for all guests, and level two has a restaurant with microwave and ice machine outside for your konbini meals. No view from the room, but that's fine cos the Onsen itself was worth a visit. Steep short hill up to the lobby, but if you drive then that's fine. Free to use outdoor BBQ area, but didn't have the chance to. Rooms were comfy, sleep was good with minimal disturbance. Side note: my underwear got stolen at the onsen and I never managed to find it back again but that's fine cos it was worth the Onsen experience. Stayed two nights here, no regrets, would totally do it again! Oh and Onsen area has got numbered lockers to store your belongings but not your undies!"

"Smile Hotel Wakayama is conveniently located right beside Wakayama Castle, making it a great choice for sightseeing and exploring the area. Overall, we had a good stay and a pleasant experience. Although the hotel’s renovation and interior are slightly outdated, the room was still clean and comfortable. Considering the price and the excellent location, it is more than acceptable and offers great value for money. What truly stood out was the excellent service from the front desk staff. They were extremely friendly, helpful, and professional. We encountered a problem with our car during our stay, and the staff kindly assisted us by contacting the police and helping us handle the situation, which we really appreciated. Overall, it’s a great option if you’re looking for a budget-friendly hotel with a fantastic location and outstanding service."

"I had planned to go to the Expo, but Osaka city is expensive, and I'd never been to Wakayama, so I chose this hotel near Wakayamashi Station with the intention of exploring Wakayama Castle. All the amenities were provided, but it was a shame that there were no slippers. There was also coffee and a water server in the lobby. The building is a bit old, but for the price and quality, I guess that's understandable. I would recommend this hotel for anyone mainly planning on sightseeing."

"A truly satisfying hotel in Shirahama! All facilities and the main building are accessible, and the hot springs and foot bath are excellent. The room wasn't small, and even though it was facing the road, it was incredibly quiet at night. The sea breeze was so pleasant! Shirahama is a lot of fun, and I'll definitely stay at Key 1 again next time! The location is super convenient; it's easy to walk to everything nearby. I even walked to the local beer factory for a refreshing pint – fantastic!"

"The kids were thrilled with the dome-shaped room! It was a Japanese-style room, so they had a great time running around and doing cartwheels! The mattresses could have been a little thicker! The breakfast and dinner buffets had a slightly limited selection, but the fresh sashimi was fantastic! It was a shame that the hot springs opened so late in the morning! Next time, I'd like to stay in a different room!"

"I booked this hotel because it was reasonably priced and the distance from both Wakayama City Station and Wakayama Station was the same. It was farther than I expected when I walked, so I recommend taking the bus from the station. I booked a single room, but it was very spacious with two beds. Amenities were minimal, but I liked that there was a microwave in the room. I chose the breakfast option, and they provided something like a bento box."

"I called because I didn't know where the parking lot was and they were very helpful! Despite making a last-minute reservation and checking in late, they had a vacancy so they moved me to a larger room, allowing me to relax in a spacious room. There are hot springs and restaurants nearby, so I think the location is convenient. Although it doesn't have an ocean view, it was nice to be able to stay with my family at a reasonable price."

One-minute stroll from Kii Katsuura station. From JPY 3.000.

"A cute and cozy hotel with two showers and one shared toilet. You need to book in advance for the hot spring, and each session is 25 minutes. A downside was that I couldn't get in touch with the hotel. I tried through Trip.com but it didn't work, and the hotel doesn't have an email address. There's a phone number, but I didn't use it as I wouldn't have been able to understand or communicate. However, in the end, the hotel staff on-site were very polite and accommodating."

It wasn't the most pleasant experience considering that the males n females had to share toilets and that some other rooms had private toilets n bath instead. And also the fact that the walls are super thin hence whomever is connected to your room if their loud or they don't like your voice volume than you might get kicked to the curb. It's a very frustrating experience for sure since it tests one's patience n ability to let go. It's training for the customers n monks alike. I met a Japanese friend here whom shared with me how rude the monks and the staff were to one another n I think that shows the quality of this place however we were pretty lucky as there was a male who spoke mandarin n a male who spoke English both quite well in this place n though the mandarin speaker was quite condescending towards the other monks, the English speaker was really nice n patient overall. He helped me out a lot since we couldn't communicate with the others n seemed to be the only customers that spoke English whom booked this place by ourselves, the others around seemed to have a guide n were usually in groups. It's a unique experience n I recommend just staying for one night or going to the other temples. I went for the ajikan meditation at eko in temple n the service n cleanliness was on another level for sure. The food here was also really simple. Also a must see are the tomb area n the walk to kobold daishi temple. As a sensitive person, I felt the overwhelming love n presence and the cleanse of my heart of this amazing soul over there. To me, that was worth it. Remember to clean yourself with the water out front before going in.... and of course to the amazing fateful friendship that occurred for us with the jap-********* couple we met. It was the next fav of mine after the time spent in nara visitor center. That was truly magickal n how I wished we stayed longer there. But all was good cause the way I planned this trip made it so that we would have this fateful encounter to the end of our trip.

Highly recommended. Good private location, superb service, big indoor and outdoor onsen, superb view and exceptional service. I stayed during end of Nov. 24. The hotel is value for money indeed. The room is definitely not 17m as it s indicated. It s very spacious with great private sea bay view. I stayed during end here one night and stayed at KAMENOI hotel another night. I truly prefer warmth atmosphere here. The outdoor onsen here is certainly better as well! If I go to Katsuura again, I will definitely stay here.

It was out of our expectation. It is a standalone apartment that has everything you need. It is better to register all the guest’s information online via the email. That will make your check-in more convenient. We were impressed with the backyard. We planned to have dinner there. Unfortunately, it was cold and raining. We definitely wanna stay there again. It’s at a very great location, close to the shopping center, and the bus stop of Kumano hiking, just in a few mins walk. Even you don’t do hiking, it is also good for a bunch of friends for a retreat.

The hotel is situated at a secluded corner of Wakayama prefecture. It is much preferable to drive here rather than relying on the infrequent hotel shuttle. Public transport is otherwise non existent. There are no restaurants around the hotel. However the hotel provides delicious meals with abundant fresh seafood. The in room dining experience is superb. The hotel staff service is impeccable. The room has a spectacular sea view allowing you to see the sunset on clear days. The onsen also faces the sea which provides a relaxing experience. A downside is that the hotel does not seem to sanitize the slippers for indoor use. All hotel guests had to change to their slippers to access their indoor facilities.

The hotel is conveniently located right behind the Hashiguiiwa Rocks. Upon entering, the vibe, scent, and lighting create a welcoming atmosphere, complemented by friendly staff. The design is minimal yet cozy, with a keen attention to detail; every spot is perfect for photography with great lighting. There's also a snack bar offering unlimited coffee and tea during your stay—definitely a highlight, as their coffee is excellent. The common area is situated in a spacious and comfortable lobby. If you have some time, be sure to grab a coffee from the snack bar and relax in the lobby; it's definitely a great place to recharge. Our room matched the photos perfectly, featuring a Scandinavian design that felt very cozy. The space was ample for two people with two large pieces of luggage. The bed was incredibly comfortable, contributing to a quiet overall environment that allowed us to enjoy a great night's sleep. We opted for a room with a sea view, and the scenery was breathtaking as soon as we entered. Kushimoto is known as one of the top 100 sunrise spots, but unfortunately, the morning was shrouded in heavy clouds, preventing us from witnessing the sunrise.

The onsen (hot spring) was fantastic. For men, there were two large pools (inner and outer) plus three individual pools. It was rarely crowded; during the National Day holiday, there were usually only four or five people bathing at any one time, making it perfect for Chinese guests who aren't used to Japanese hot springs. Since the hotel doesn't have a restaurant, there's a large public area on the first floor where guests can heat up their own food in the microwave, have coffee, or read a book. I'd definitely go back again! 😁 (PS: I stayed at six or seven guesthouses throughout Japan, and this one had the most comfortable mattress and linens—much more comfortable than the newly renovated Marriott in Kobe. For a Fairfield brand, it was way above average. Lying on this bed after a tiring hike on the Kumano Kodo was so relaxing.) There's an island park near the hotel where you can watch the sunrise and see the sea (but the grass and trees are a bit dense, so you'll need to go with friends).
