Zagreb Hostels

"What began as a suspiciously underpriced, gorgeously designed, epicentrically located property with heart and smiles for days...turned into a psychotic, abusive nightmare, like something straight out of Rosemary’s Baby. Never in all my days, in all the hundreds of properties and thousands of nights in everything from backpacker hostels to five-star suites, have I been subjected not simply to bad service (fixable) but outright and unrepentant hostility, harassment and torment by the staff. Unbelievable. As the gentleman and professional many know me to be, I in good faith detailed the infractions, called for a GM meeting, recommended simple solutions, had multiple follow-up meetings, and presumed the offending micro-tyrants would be disciplined and neutralized. They weren’t. It only got worse. And worse still. Think, stalking, door slamming, man-handling my iPad (verboten), shorting guest change when paying by cash in the bar (witnessed multiple times), having aggressive security called for eating in an otherwise public area five minutes beyond a theretofore unknown “rule,” asking me repeated and pointedly “how long I would be staying...” you get the idea. So, in the end, I cancelled two weeks of reservations (which would have been expanded to 6+) and protested with my feet. I left. A day out and I STILL feel emotionally winded, unsure of what I just witnessed. All I know is that if my behavior to a client or guest even approached this, I’d be – and should be – terminated on the spot. This was not the decision of management. But maybe it’s me. Maybe this is Croatia’s version of adventure travel. Not enough to make me fall out of love with Zagreb...but close. Interesting world."

"It was a very enjoyable stay at a humorous hostel. Breakfast was also included and I was able to bake * and eat it. I was a little troubled because I wasn't aware of staying consecutive nights, but I was able to respond quickly. Thank you very much."

"24-hour front desk service 👍 The location is not far from the train station and bus station, and not far from the old town 👌 There is an Asian restaurant nearby, which is a plus It is a chain youth hostel that can be accommodated in various parts of Europe 5 euro deposit to lock the locker, and a hair dryer can be borrowed at the front desk"

"The first time I stayed in the Youth Hostel, it was much better than expected. People from all over the world were very friendly, and the labels written by everyone in the restaurant were also very interesting. You can rest assured to live in the Youth Hostel in the future!"

"Located near to the town square with nearby tram stations to the inter city bus terminal. Hostel is clean and well maintained with clean bedsheets and towel. Room is spacious with adequate space and locker. Well equipped kitchen to prepare your meals and large common areas for relaxation. Arrived at the hotel on the 21st April 2025 at 6am and requested to store my luggage but was directed to store my luggage downstairs in the common area even though the luggage room was right behind her. However would highly recommend this hostel to fellow travellers."

"Bittersweet stay at Speeka. Bad weather first 2 days and few mayor sites still closed due to earthquake in 2020. Hostel is located at 3-lanes main street so prepare for the traffic almost 24/7. Windows are old so don't stop the noise. 1st two nights I slept in room number 9 and there were two other cranky beds making so much noise with every move made. Then I moved to nr 6 and it was much better. Staying there you need to be also prepared for coffee, tea and hot water shortages. And those shabby walls make an impression that the owner doesn't want to invest too much in renovation. Good thing is that hostel is in walking distance from the old town and everything is actually very closed. People are nice and helpful, thanks to the lady at the reception I managed to print a ticket for 2Cellos - without it I wouldn't enter cause they don't have scanners to read a ticket on smartphone screen. But the concert itself was also sad, maybe cause of those strings sound. I don't know what happened but most likely will visit Zagreb in a few years again and stay at some better place."

"The location is very good, there are many bakeries nearby, the bus terminal, the city center and other places can be reached in up to 20 minutes. The whole hostel is very clean and smells so good! ! ! I regret that I forgot to ask the boss which aromatherapy I used. The only downside is that there is a bit noisy on the street. I don’t know who has been honking the car horn the night I lived... In addition (maybe my own problem), I didn’t find the hair dryer, but the problem is not big ～"

"not too far from main train station, about 15mjn tram ride. the place itself is what u expect at this price, not too bad. the staff is very helpful, and open till 11pm i think, which is very helpful for if u are arriving late. i did a 1 night trip to neighbouring countries and they were helpful to keep the luggage until we came back. i recommend this place"
