3-Star Hotels in San Jose, Costa Rica

Thanks to Trip.com staff for coordinating the check-in time and adjusting the quiet room in time. The front desk staff of the hotel has a young lady's professionalism and is better to find the staff to connect to Wi-Fi in time.

We felt that for an upscale hostel, this place was on a whole, a great experience. My only suggestion is that the rooms need more ventilation. Our 4 person dorm room had a tiny window blocked by the beds. Putting a vent fan in the window would solve this issue. Otherwise, for what it is we loved our 2-night stay here. This was at the end of our 3 week trip and had been to many towns and places across the country, I'd say we met the most friends here and had the best time. The cafe could use more larger/common tables but we were able to meet people easily regardless. They have activities and events to encourage interaction as well as a bar and pizza oven. While these amenities are overpriced, they were convenient and similar to other hotel restaurants/cafes. We didn't feel the staff was pushy at all and if we just wanted to hang out in the cafe we weren't bothered and didn't feel forced to buy something. (and probably because of this, we usually did buy food or drinks) The location was good enough - we could walk to the central market / pedestrian mall in 10 minutes. It's walkable (during daytime) from the 7-10 bus station and the Tuasa bus to the airport. The co-working space we felt was a good value, and fantastic. High powered wifi can support video meetings and it's just across the street. Also somewhat social and a good environment to work. The staff and regular patrons were amazing and we felt that we had new friends as soon as we arrived. The place had a warm feeling that I can't quite describe, created by both the staff and the guests. We didn't want to leave.

I’ve stayed in a ton of low-budget hotels and hostels, but this is the first time I’ve ever just swallowed the money that I pre-paid for a place and left for a different hotel. I know you get what you pay for - in this case a really basic room with one tiny bedside lamp in a seedy part of town, and we were ok with that, but the room just reeked. After opening the windows and it not getting any better, I went back downstairs and quietly asked if we could see another room if one was available. The desk guy had a long conversation with the manager in the office behind, took another key and followed me back to the room to check. “It could just be the cleaning product we use in all the bathrooms” he said. “I’m pretty sure it’s more than that - it’s really bad” I said. “You can feel it burning in your throat”. “I’m sorry, the manager told me you could not see another room”, he replied, and left still holding the key to a different room in his hand. My friend then went to check out the shared bathrooms on the floor. “They smell fine” he said. So I booked a room in another place nearby (Fleur de Lys - a bit more expensive but clean, comfortable, with a super friendly front desk). As we were waiting with our bags back down to the lobby, the desk guy eventually appears again, with a reluctant “You don’t have to go, I will show you the other room.” Ugh. Finally, you have to be both buzzed into the place and buzzed out, and if the front desk guy is off doing something else, be prepared to wait. And wait... Pretty sad place.

The hotel is located in the centre of the city, near the TUASA bus terminal that serves the airport (and this is not negligible, 1.5 euros per person instead of 40 euros for a taxi). I loved: The Price, WI-FI, hot water, litter, location not far from airport bus. I didn't like it: The area is a little blind as soon as the night falls, the whole of the apartment is old - a lot too noisy location because in the city centre, trapped between street noises that starts at 4:30 a.m. and dancing at 50m. All windows open up to 2 a.m., very light breakfast, very old equipment. Rooms without windows. In short, cheap price for one night 47 euros but don't count to recover from your time delay.

I just came back from a week long trip to Costa Rica and stayed at the Studio Hotel Boutique. Everything about this hotel was wonderful. Outstanding service from the staff, beautiful hotel in a quiet part of Santa Ana, and beautiful art all over the hotel. We felt like we were staying in a museum. The restaurant had great food, and a great breakfast buffet, with a wide variety of choices for everyone. Harold who is in charge of the tours was wonderful. We contacted him before our visit, and he took care of everything for us. We always go with big chain hotels, but the price and the reviews for this hotel encouraged us to take a chance. I’m so glad we did. The price was decent and the hotel was excellent, a real find. I give this hotel 5 stars. I look forward to staying there again, and I recommend this hotel to anyone taking a trip to Costa Rica.

The hotel is very comfortable, very rich breakfast, very clean room, the room is for 4 people or if you are lucky you stay alone, the payment is very easy.

I really loved my stay at Posada el Quijote. It was my final night in Costa Rica before catching my flight back home and it was a brilliant place to relax and rest before the long journey. Fernando was really helpful and friendly, as was the other gentleman on reception in the evening. The pool has a brilliant view of San José, and being that bit higher up, there was a lovely breeze so it was a nice temperature for sunbathing. It was a 12 minute walk to a Fresh Market when I wanted to pop out for lunch and get supplies. The breakfast included had a range of options including gluten-free pancakes! There's a lovely dog called Perla on-site as well as seven cats. It felt like a nice homely place to stay. The pool could do with a little bit of TLC, as it needed a bit of fixing and cleaning in places, but it did the job for me as a final place to stay in Costa Rica.

We stayed twice at Bougainvillea, 3 nights at the start of our birding tour, and one night at the end. It is a great introduction to Costa Rica and birding. We really loved the garden out the back, which had plenty of new birds for us. The buffet breakfast in the morning was probably the best on our trip (the only one that had a good muesli for me!) and the restaurant catered well for gluten free and vegetarian diets, with enough variety when staying a couple of days. The sandwiches are highly recommended. The rooms are spacious. There is a security box that works, and WiFi is flawless. There is a fan in the rooms but no air conditioning, and on the hot days we were there I did find the rooms a little too hot in the evenings when trying to sleep. It does cool down to around 20 degrees overnight, but that is a little hot for me. Service from all staff was excellent. They do money exchange at reception and help organise taxis for going in to San Jose. This hotel is very popular with western birders arriving in the country and it lives up to its reputation. Highly recommended.

It was late July when I visited San José, the capital city of Costa Rica, from where you can easily get to see the country's cloud forest, volcanoes, and waterfalls owing to its central location. I didn't have any hesitation to choose Hotel Milán de San José. A double room was allocated for me. The climate was temperate during my 6-day stay; and there was no need to switch on the air conditioner or the ceiling fan. I had a peaceful sleep every night. The staff were courteous and helpful indeed. Though not everyone could speak fluent English, we managed to communicate well; and I had a pleasant rapport with them. Each morning, I delightfully woke up and looked ahead to enjoy a good traditional Costa Rican breakfast. It was indeed an enjoyable getaway in San José City; and Hotel Milán had complemented my vacation.

I chose this hotel because of its 24 hour service, as we came into San Jose CR on a late flight and needed late check in. The clerk was amazingly nice. She didnt speak English but we managed with Google translate. Since the parking lot was locked, she told us we could park in front of the hotel and nothing would happen to our fancy rental car- we were skeptical but she was right. The hotel is totally basic but clean. The tiny room with no windows to the outside. was fine for one night. The mattresses were clean as was the linen. However the even tinier bathroom had a terrible odor and the faucet was unsteady. Showering was not for the faint-of-hearted. There was a safe on one of the shelves. Since the doors lock is basic I wouldnt leave valuables there. There was a small shared refrigerator next to the reception, that was adequate for our needs. nFor the most part it was quiet and we awoke early to get out of San Jose before the traffic. There is no elevator but we had no problem with the clean and wide, well lit staircase.

Excellent setup beautiful place surrounding birds singing upon wake up in conclusion a paradise. I recommend this for those who want to enjoy San Jose Costa Rica. Very close from the main locations in the city
