4-Star Hotels in San Jose, Costa Rica

We stayed for one night after arriving in San Jose. We got a taxi from the airport, which took about half an hour to get to the hotel. The hotel is really big and spacious, the rooms were comfortable, and we particularly enjoyed the lovely pool area outside where we could relax with drinks from the bar.

I’ve stayed in some pretty low end places and this is one of the worst. Our room had no windows. I’ve never heard of such a thing for a hotel. One of the elevators was broken, we were given half a roll of toilet paper, the carpet was dirty, and there was zero hot water. Yes, this place is conveniently located and sure, it was quiet, but it’s a total rip off. Coffee downstairs in the morning was $9 USD. Our key stopped working and we had to get it reprogrammed. I’ve stayed in better hostels.

Big hotel near the main historic downtown area, just a few minutes walk from several major public museums and art galleries, and many options nearby for casual and upscale bars and restaurants. Our king-bed studio was on the 12th floor, with a great view of the city and the mountains beyond. Breakfast was a typical hotel buffet, and plentiful with something for everyone. Check-in was very smooth. We looked in on the 3rd floor pool but didn’t take time to try it out. One thing missing was an in-room guide to hotel amenities and services, so we had to keep calling or dropping by the front desk. They were helpful, but it would save everyone time if there was an in-room booklet.

This hotel has potential, and location is good if this is the area you need to be. Lots of restaurants nearby, and beside the main road. However, staff needs some training on Customer Service. Some staff are wonderful to be clear, but some have basic training issue. The front desk requires service training on handling guests. Examples: talking to another guest for 5-8 mins only to revert back to me and telling me no receipt because system is down; you could have told me immediately instead of letting me wait. I called up for my laundry, was advised they will check and return my call- after 20 mins, no call, and I have to call again only to be told that I need to go down to pick it up since I have to pay first at the reception (my bill was paid already in advance by my colleague), but hey, am not escaping, you have a copy of my credit card, and my check out is still the ff day. I can follow process, but the reception could have said it in a nicer way- am a paying guest in a Hilton brand, not some hostel paying 20$ a night.

The hotel is beautiful, the staff is very friendly and gentle. It is located 20 minutes from the airport and precise for what I needed. The breakfast is delicious, and the price is good since in Costa Rica everything is very expensive.

The hotel was clean and comfortable with great food and good service. We were there for 3 nights at the beginning of our trip and 1 night at the end. The staff accommodated our early check in on our last stay, which we very much appreciated. We also had relatives visit us in the lobby and they were very accommodating with moving the furniture around for us to be comfortable. There was a lot of variety for breakfast! We would definitely stay again, if in Costa Rica.

By the end of our stay one of our relatives literally hoarded the cookies, asking for 4-5 per day. The pool was very pretty, and the breakfast was so fancy, aesthetic and tasty! The rooms were nice and cool, very clean, and had a great selection of TV channels. On the last night of our trip, we had initially pre-planned to stay at this one hotel in the forrest, but our party decided to leave because of a number of concerning observations. We were all exhausted as it was the end of our trip, and needed somewhere to stay. Immediately everyone started chanting that they wanted to go back to the DoubleTree. We arrived and everyone sighed a relief, and we went to our warm beds with our cookies!

We have been coming to this hotel once a quarter for a couple of years now and have been consistently impressed by the level of service. From front desk experience with Austin, who always knows our name and exudes positivity, to the attentive and warm service we get from Marlyn as we enjoy breakfast, this hotel has become an experience my wife insists upon EVERY time we visit San Jose! Clean, efficient, quiet, and centrally located for Escazu. It's a great base of operations for San Jose!

Great location in the heart of San Jose, within walking distance from all the city’s attractions. As a Hilton member, we were recognised with a great upgrade to a nice and modern room. The daily breakfast was sumptuous with local and western options. The evening happy hour was incredible and the best selection of drinks we’ve ever been to. Would also like to thank several staff who helped us during our stay - Anthony the bellhop, and Carlos + Marcela, severs at the hotel’s restaurant. One suggestion is for the reception counter staff to be more friendly and approachable. The perception we got was they were cold and rushed.

The staff was very friendly, especially Sylvia from from front desk. She set up my Marriott membership so I can earn points and also helped by directing me to their laundry room, instead of looking for a local laundromat. The hotel is small and so conveniently near restaurants and a mall. I would come back again.

The hotel is located in the center of San Jose. Downstairs is a main pedestrian street. It is convenient to eat and go shopping. It may be because of the country's reasons. The hotel feels old and it feels a little unsafe to go out at night. The hotel is decorated in an old-fashioned style, and the hotel lobby is on the second floor, very retro style. The breakfast is relatively rich, but after two days of eating, I feel that there is nothing to eat. It may be that the Chinese stomach is not used to it. Fruit, juice, coffee, a lot of milk, this is great. The bathroom in the hotel has only a shower head, which is very inconvenient. In addition, the drinking water is installed by the hotel itself, and it is always not safe to drink.

Very good hotel, high cost performance, convenient transportation, supermarkets and McDonald's, the hotel restaurant level is good, the price is relatively good.

Terrible hotel experience. We booked 4 nights in Jr Suite with a King bed and upon check in were given a room with 2 double beds. The front desk manager said our room was unavailable. (How is that possible when there is only 1 other guest in the entire hotel?). We told the front desk manager we would stay 1 night but have to cancel the other 3 nights and find another hotel. Evidently at that point he charged our credit card for all 4 nights. Our room had ants all over the kitchen area, rock hard beds and only 2 bath towels which were worn through and shouldn't be used in a car repair shop as a rag. When we checked out the next morning the front desk manager told us the owner of the hotel refused to cancel the other 3 nights and had charged us already. He said the policy requires 72 hour to change or cancel. I explained they did not and would not provide the room we paid for so there is no contract but the owner didn't care. Maybe other people who wrote positive reviews enjoyed their stay but I would never recommend staying at a hotel run like this. There are far better hotels for the same price in Santa Ana

Such an enchanting hotel, worth the 40-minute car ride from SJO. The rooms, as well as the dining room had personality & exquisite views. Each large room had its own floor plan, a plethora of storage space, plenty of towels, bathroom amenities and outlets. Despite having balcony doors, the cool outside air didn’t circulate into the room due to balcony walls blocking any breeze. My room had a ceiling fan, and the AC, although small, worked fine. BTW, I’m extremely fussy about needing cold temperatures (lower than 66 deg. F) to sleep. I did close the bathroom door to make the area needing to be cooled smaller. My daughter complained that her room didn’t have a ceiling fan. The highlight of our evening was the delicious dinner in the beautiful dining room. It had old world charm with white table clothes and seasoned waiters. The waiter knew every ingredient in each dish; a lost art. Remember bread before a meal? It is still served here. Our waiter was very respectful despite the fact that we were disheveled from a long day of tours and travel. We were still in our outdoor clothing. There seemed to be no dress codes. Many guests were dressed elegantly in evening clothes , others with tee shirts, and then some wore clothing native to other countries. Don’t think twice. Make the reservation. Get a room with a ceiling fan. Spend some time visiting the animal rescue a block away and enjoy not being in just another chain hotel room.
