"It's been half a month since I got back. Shantou was our last stop, and we stayed for three days, really wanting to enjoy a 'slow travel' experience with my family.
The room was very spacious with a super large 2-meter bed. When we first arrived, I forgot to request a non-smoking room, but the owner was proactive in airing it out to remove the smell. The room faced the street, directly across from a central park. There were two layers of screens and windows, so it was quiet at night. Even my light-sleeping family members found it peaceful.
The bathroom had a separate wet and dry area, and surprisingly, the shampoo and shower gel were Adouff, not some random brand 👍.
There's a bus stop nearby, and bus 105 goes directly to Nanao Island. However, Shantou doesn't have a subway, and the buses are generally very, very slow, so you really need to plan your time. (One day, I wanted to go to Mayu Island, but after waiting for almost an hour for the bus, I gave up).
For food, I recommend Wuji Xinghua, though it's a bit far. Longyan Road Food Street is very close, with lots of snacks and delicious food to explore. There's also a vendor near Laomagon Stage who makes Puning tofu – absolutely amazing 👍.
Regarding the itinerary, Shantou's attractions are a bit spread out. The Shantou Small Park area is mainly a pedestrian street, and you can actually explore it in half a day. If you're waiting for the sunset, you might need to keep an eye on the bus schedule for your return trip.
The Que石 Scenic Area is actually quite large, and it's currently under construction. Hiking there could take a good half-day, so we ultimately skipped it. It's highly recommended to visit the Chaoshan Museum and the Zhenbao Museum across from it earlier in the day. If you want to see an Yingge dance performance, the Chaoshan Museum also has a small paid theater.
The 1-yuan ferry has interesting photo spots. The entire journey is only 5 minutes, so if you want to take pictures, you need to act fast as the background scenery is best then.
Chaoshan has many interesting shops, and it's really more suited for a slow-paced trip. We often spent half a day in one shop, experiencing the fascinating blend of new and old cultures, like coffee and tea. It was very enjoyable."
