"I’ve stayed in many hostels before and understand you sometimes get what you pay for, but my stay at Wake Up! Sydney Central was disappointing.
We booked a private room for three with a shared bathroom. The room had a strong “slept-in” smell which seemed to come from the actual pillows and bedding rather than the sheets. The shared bathrooms were also quite dirty, and during our five-day stay I only saw them cleaned once.
The kitchen on the first floor is far too small for the number of guests. Fridges and cupboards were completely full, and with only a few cooktops, sinks and microwaves it’s very difficult to cook or find a place to eat.
The hostel is very focused on partying, with events like pizza nights and free drinks in the kitchen area. It’s also quite noisy, with partying and heavy doors slamming day and night, so don’t expect much sleep.
Considering how expensive Sydney is, this place still felt overpriced. The building is run down (cracked sinks), beds have thin mattresses, and we even saw a large cockroach one day. Staff simply said, “this is Australia.”
There’s also no ramp at the entrance, so heavy luggage has to be carried up the stairs.
The only real positive is the great location."

"Nice hotel overall, enjoyed walking around the Rocks.
But it’s very hilly and the Wynyard station is WAY MORE ACCESSIBLE than Circular Quay. Still, had to walk ~10min.
There’s a nice rooftop view and bar. My room was right next to the bar where people talked loudly and played music, but the soundproofing is great, so it didn’t bother me.
My roommates didn’t want to open windows at night and it was impossible to use the AC, so it felt extremely stuffy inside.
I also previously stayed in a Japanese hostel, and I really liked the idea of separating storage and bathroom from a sleeping area there. In this hostel, if neighbours want to find something in their suitcase, it’s very noisy. Doors are noisy too and it’s impossible to close them quietly.
Nice restaurant area, very spacious and there’s also the kitchen where you can cook/store food in a fridge.
The door key can be added to Apple Wallet so it was very convenient."

"I have stayed at a hostel like 々 so far, but I felt the dirtyest. It may be only the room I stayed in, but my personal belongings were scattered throughout the room and obviously the room was not cleaned. There was a sticker on the door of the room that prohibited eating and drinking in the room, but I felt that the dishes after eating and drinking were left unattended and there was no rule. Also, since the locker was already used, even if I offered to change the room for that reason, I couldn't respond to anything because there was no vacancy. Certainly the location is good near the station, breakfast is included, and the lobby is now a feeling, so it may be good considering the accommodation fee, but first of all, I want you to manage the filthyness of the room. I was there."

"Sydney Central YHA is the best-equipped and most pleasant hostel I've ever stayed in! I was in a 4-bed female dorm. There are power outlets right by the bed, facing downwards, so if your adapter isn't tight, it might fall out. However, there are USB and USB-C ports directly, which is super convenient. Each bed also has a reading light and a blackout curtain, offering great privacy.
The kitchen and dining area are huge, with a complete array of cooking utensils that are very practical and exceptionally clean; everyone is very considerate. There's a large supermarket, Coles, right near the hostel, making it easy to buy groceries. During my stay, I cooked for myself every day – it was delicious, hygienic, and affordable.
The best part is its location right by Central Station. Trains, buses, and all kinds of transport converge here, offering excellent connectivity and making it incredibly convenient to get anywhere.
Accessing the lifts, rooms, and communal bathrooms all require card access, ensuring top-notch security."

"This is a very good hostel, and I got it for a great price.
Location
It is very close to Hyde Park and St. Mary’s Cathedral. Since I don’t mind walking, it’s also a 30-minute walk to Circular Quay and the Opera House. There are nearby Woolworths (grocery store), cafes, and bakeries.
Cleanliness
The rooms are clean, and the common kitchen and other areas are very well maintained. One small suggestion: the frequency of cleaning for the shower area should be increased, but it’s still acceptable.
Hostel Vibe (Including Crews)
They’ve created a strong sense of community. In fact, this is one of the few hostels where you’ll be excited to return early because they offer free daily activities (running club, movie night, wine and cheese, picnic day, etc.) that allow you to meet people. It’s fun, and did I mention it’s free? The crews are very friendly and helpful, always smiling.
Safety
They have excellent emergency preparedness procedures, so I felt very safe. The location of the hostel is also very quiet.

They have laundry area. Clothing iron is very accessible. You can cook because the kitchen is super complete."

"The actual place looks much older than in the pictures. The single room amenities were very basic: just a bed, a simple cabinet, a clothes rack, a mirror, and a fan (quite high up) – no air conditioning. The street-facing room was very noisy. The shared bathrooms had two hot showers and three toilets. There are only stairs, no elevator, which is inconvenient if you have luggage. The front desk had a pride flag hanging, and they were quite friendly. It's very convenient that Coles and a shopping mall are just across the street, and it's not far from the Museum and Central stations."

The room was clean.
However, the bed I had was not in good condition.

"I stayed in a quad room, but there were only two of us actually staying. Although the hotel provided breakfast and dinner, both were quite basic. The room was cleaned very thoroughly, and the furniture was made of solid or open-bottom designs, making it less likely to accumulate dirt. The bed we actually used made a slight creaking sound when sat on."

GGuest UserWas a great stay. Communication is not their strong point. They didn't reply to 6 messages done by phone and through their website. All I wanted was 3 more rooms for one night.
Lady at reception sorted it all out quick smart upon arrival. That was impressive, but the non-communication will always linger.

VVicki HughesOverall a good 3 night stay at the Hermitage. Large spacious room, fairly comfortable bed/bedding. Don’t know about aircon/heating as it was not used during our stay.
Unfortunately it is not shown in the online pictures that the hotel is surrounded by commercial facilities on 3 sides and a highway on the 4th.
Great to have a fridge and tea/coffee making facilities as well as a toaster (as breakfast is not offered at the hotel). Unfortunately, though you can cook toast there were no plates or knives supplied to put any butter or spreads on it.
The restaurant meal was great, service was really good, wine list small (inexpensive) but fine.
The whole experience was let down by our final night when we ordered in-house meals from the restaurant at 7.30 and when we called at 9pm to enquire how much longer they would be we were informed our order had been lost. Went to sleep hungry. Attitude over this issue was abysmal.

The hotel is above the pub, which is also very busy in the afternoon.
There is also live music there on Sundays until around 9 p.m.
Everything is perfectly fine, unless you have room 10 next to the washing machine/dryer and sleep next to the ventilation. Even though drying and washing is not allowed after 9 p.m., it was very annoying.
The hotel rooms face the back, so in the morning you also have the noise from the loading area of the supermarket.
On the positive side, the room was in a modern condition and the staff were all very nice.
The beach is a ten-minute walk away.

GGuest UserWe booked Marco Polo Motor Inn for 3 nights. The room was very clean and looked like it had been recently refurbished. Queen bed was very comfortable. There was also a 3 seater sofa. Towels were changed daily. TV channels worked fine. Aircon was cold without strange smells. There was a microwave, kettle, plates n bowls, cutlery,, cups n glasses. A mini fridge with freezer and even a cute single slice toaster! Coffee, tea bags n hot chocolate were provided. Parking was secure and ample. Will definitely be back if driving from Gold Coast to Sydney again. It is also walking distance to the train station. A great find! Signage was Marco Polo Motel though and we were slightly confused by it. Reception was great, friendly and helpful.

GGuest UserThe location is fantastic! It's only a 5-minute walk to Central Station and a 30-minute walk to the Opera House. This really helped me save a lot on transportation costs. The interior of the guesthouse itself was pretty standard, nothing special, but I really appreciated the free toast for breakfast!

GGuest UserI was lucky enough to have my room ready in advance, before 2PM and since my flight arrived early in the morning, that was really nice !
Cathy was also a wonderful person in general, throughout my stay.
The room is pretty big, with a sink and a fridge. 👌🏻
The room I had is next to the common area however people weren't too loud, especially in the evening despite it roughly being the dinner time so that was nice.
The area is very chill, a few schools and houses around so not loud at night. It is, however, situated on the planes' route and they are pretty low in the sky since it gets close to the airport. But there aren't any at night (around midnight until 6AM I would say) and it's not every 5 minutes either.
The sun set pretty early at that time of the year and to me, I felt like the neighborhood lacked lights for people to walk around but it wasn't much of a bother and not something the lodge can change, so just a heads-up to have a small light/enough battery on the phone to use when coming back from your day trip activities.

GGuest UserGreat location, very budget building, toilets and showers very basic and outdated but capsule quite pleasant, new and roomy, USB outlet wasn't working to charge phone on capsule so front counter staff gave me a power bank who h was great of them.
Front of house staff usually only around during check in times, bring a towel or they will charge you for one.
You get a free locker of decent size to store your things which is a bonus.
Fantastic China town cbd location with access to trams and buses within 100m.
