Mountain View Hotels in Nikko

"4.5 stars!  Property is older but extremely well maintained.  The corner western/Japanese rooms are spacious with two western beds and tatami area, single japanese bath and shower area and separate toilet area, mini fridge, tv, sitting area overlooking the river and table with four chairs as well as a massage chair!  Onsen area has both indoor and outdoor areas separate for men and women and a cold plunge as well as multiple hot baths.  Minus half a star for low staffing in the store/cafe areas (often no staff member to be found when kakigori desired), no in house lunch option and overly fatty meat on the 3rd night dinner (breakfast and dinner were LARGE and BEAUTIFUL but perhaps heavy on the yuba.  Also, shuttle to the train station is only at 10 and 11am and getting cabs is difficult.  However, would overwhelmingly recommend Nikko Senhime Monogatari!"

"An affordable hotel with its own small onsen. In the evenings, I always had it to myself, which was wonderful! The hotel might not be brand new, but the room was fully equipped with everything I needed – a kettle, a fridge, and a hairdryer. It's located a 15-minute walk from the station, which I didn't find inconvenient at all. I traveled to Nikko every day, using my all-area Free Pass, and the journey, with one transfer, took about 1 to 1.5 hours. For this price, only hostels were available in Nikko. But here, I got a proper hotel with spacious rooms."

"This guesthouse is super close to JR Nikko Station, just a 5-minute walk away. The buses to Toshogu Shrine also stop right by JR Nikko Station, making it incredibly convenient. The owner's wife was very welcoming; she first asked about my travel plans and then meticulously explained how to get everywhere, handing me maps and bus timetables for the next day. I stayed in a Japanese-style room on the second floor with a toilet nearby, and the shower room on the first floor was very clean and comfortable. The next morning, the owner's wife prepared a delicious and complimentary breakfast, giving us a real taste of local life. She even gave us an origami crane as a blessing... Her thoughtfulness and genuine hospitality offered a warmth that's different from staying in a regular hotel."

"Nikko Hoshino Yado was, without a doubt, the most stunning chapter of our trip. It's much more than just a hotel; it's a living temple of Japanese aesthetics. The beauty of its garden is comparable to the renowned Ruriko-in – the same interplay of light and shadow, the same myriad shades of autumn leaves, but with an added sense of private immersion. Staying in a room with a view of the autumn foliage, the window frame becomes a canvas, with the ever-changing seasonal scenery as its most priceless artwork. The kaiseki dinners and breakfasts are not merely a feast for the taste buds but also a visual art. Each dish is like a delicate haiku, narrating the seasonal stories of Nikko through the finest ingredients of the season. Then, sinking into the indoor and outdoor *furo* (baths), letting the warm spring water embrace your body, you can gaze upon the autumn colors of the garden or the starlit night sky. This ambiance is simply perfect. This wasn't just a stay; it was a profound healing experience centered around Japanese beauty."

"This was a spontaneous trip! I was on a business trip in Tokyo and had a weekend off. A friend recommended Nikko, and Xiaomoushu recommended the Nikko Sanctuary Garden Hotel. I booked a hotel for the next night, bought my train tickets, and headed out to Nikko early in the morning! Travel is full of challenges and surprises. Putting that aside, this hotel was truly satisfying! From Tobu Nikko Station, it's about a ten-minute taxi ride for 1,600 yen (about 80 yuan). You can also arrange a hotel pick-up a day in advance. We arrived at the hotel at 11:30 pm, so check-in wasn't until 3 pm. No problem, I just dropped my suitcase off and had the taxi driver, who hadn't left yet, take me to the World Heritage Toshogu Shrine. After a four-hour trek, I returned to the hotel, had a welcome drink, and went upstairs to rest. I was stunned by the beauty of the room (see pictures for details!) Thanks to my Ctrip friends for their highly recommended breakfast and dinner. It turned out to be worth the extra 300 yuan for two breakfasts and two dinners. It was like eating at a Michelin restaurant for free. I was so moved that I cried! Even though I was traveling alone. But even if I only had dinner for 300 RMB, it was absolutely worth it! The hotel designer was there that day, and we had a great time chatting. He's a classic music lover and a romantic at heart. He even designed a butterfly made of leaves 🍂🍃 for the menu cover and hand-painted the text on the plates. What a talent! The geta clogs for sale in the hotel lobby are also beautiful. They're said to be made by a renowned artisan. I bought a pair. I won't necessarily wear them, but I'll keep them as a work of art! 😊 Breakfast was early. Since check-out was at 10:00, I chose the latest available at 8:30 AM. I managed to get up, and then I was surprised by the breakfast, my friends. Make sure to order both breakfast and dinner. For that price, you'd only get a steak dinner! 😂 After checking out, I took the shuttle bus to Tobu Station. After checking in to store my large luggage, I took the express bus to Chuzenji to see the waterfalls and enjoy the lake. I think I'll have to stay two more days next time! This trip was perfect, Shelter Garden, see you next time!"

"The service was impeccable, with the young waiters always smiling. During my seven-day trip to Japan, this was the only place where I experienced the kind of Japanese service I've been seeing online. The room was spacious, and the food and hot springs were excellent. It was a pleasant surprise to find such a hot spring inn in a secluded area like Kawaji Yumoto. The only downside was that the furniture was a bit dated. The filter on the kettle's outlet was rusty and yellowed. I hope it's replaced soon, as it's not a very expensive item."

"Breakfast was better than dinner, but both were good. The onsen was good and clean, but I wish they provided towels at the onsen area and not having to bring our own. There were no face towels in the room. The room was old. The floor creaks. But the room was very clean. I did not smell smoke anywhere in the hotel, but it was a bit humid. The staff spoke English well. BONUS: In the game room, there is the old Pole Position car racing game and it works perfectly. Memories of my childhood. I loved this game. The hotel price was excellent for the value.it is beside a beautiful long pedestrian bridge."

"Get off at Kinugawa Onsen Station and walk about ten minutes across the bridge over the Kinugawa River to the hotel. The hotel itself is a true gem from the bubble era. The lobby offers free drinks, including a variety of draft beers, hi-pops, and red and white wines starting in the afternoon, which is quite rare. Karaoke is also free until 7 PM. The buffet is quite extensive, but you can't bring drinks into the lobby; if you want to drink anything, you need to purchase it separately! However, upon entering, I noticed a small insect crawling on my salmon sushi... emmmmmmmm, a rare point of demerit for hygiene. The hotel doesn't have a free shuttle to the station, only a paid local shuttle."

"Great location with alcohol vending machine at the entrance, coin locker at the front as well. Thankfully was available as there was only 4. Dislike how the lockers were placed outside and needed to be paid for to be used. *Likely the staffs are lazy to deal with luggage storage”. The rooms were small as expected, pillow and blanket were okay, mattress had a sink towards the middle and honestly wasn’t that comfortable. Room was quite dusty, just a single movement from your blanket would send all the dusts flying, if your nose is sensitive, beware. There’s no nose preventive measure, e.g. if someone opens their room door, it’s noticeably loud. Furthermore, since it’s a bunk bed design but in different room, if you’re unlucky and got the bottom bed, any movement from the top bed can be quite annoying. Honestly not a pleasant stay."

"This ryokan was a lovely stay in Nikko. The location was the #1 feature as it is 5-10 minutes away from the popular Toshugu Shrine attraction. The breakfast and dinner meals were some of, if not the best meals that I had during my 2.5 weeks in Japan. And the service was super attentive and there are many English speaking immigrant staff. I never encountered overcrowded public onsen during my 3 day visit. I would totally stay here again for future trips to central Nikko."
