Yunzhong Inn is a boutique courtyard-style B&B located on Gulou West Street in Datong's ancient city, Shanxi. Quiet yet central, it's within walking distance of Huayan Temple, the Nine-Dragon Wall, Chunyang Palace, the Drum Tower, Shanhua Temple, Guandi Temple, and the Confucian Temple.
The main courtyard features an antique gatehouse with an old "Inn" plaque, plus flowers, fish tanks, and seating for relaxation. The reception hall has painted beams, a solid wood desk, and a lounge area divided by antique wood carvings.
Surrounding the main courtyard are 18 Chinese-style rooms blending tradition and modernity. Each room has unique colors, patterns, lighting, paintings, ornaments, and bathroom decor, accented with the owner's collection of calligraphy, paintings, wood carvings, stone carvings, and brick carvings.
Datong is a famous historical and cultural city and one of China's nine ancient capitals. Founded over 2,400 years ago, it served as a key commandery under Zhao and Qin, a stronghold in the Han, the capital of the Northern Wei, an accompanying capital in the Liao and Jin, and a major military town in the Ming and Qing. "I've wanted to stay here for a long time, and this family trip finally made that dream come true. The check-in experience was excellent, and the facilities showed incredible attention to detail. The complimentary toiletries pack even included electric toothbrushes and Gillette razors, and all the snacks provided were from Sam's Club. Breakfast was exceptional – an à la carte style where they'd prepare whatever you ordered. Everything tasted fantastic, and there were plenty of choices. Enjoying delicious pastries in the courtyard under the sun was a truly wonderful experience!
In the evening, friends came over, and we sat on the courtyard sofa, chatted, drank tea, and watched the clouds in the night sky. We even caught a drone show from Dai Wang Mansion, which was truly delightful! We also toured the owner's private museum and wine cellar. It certainly lives up to its reputation as a courtyard built with 200 million yuan; the main gate in the middle is 200 years old. Every detail exudes taste and grandeur!
The service was excellent too. Although there weren't many staff members, they were very responsive. When my shoes got wet in the heavy rain, they even brought a hairdryer to dry them for me – I was truly grateful! In short, the value for money at this price is unbeatable! Five-star recommendation! 👍👍👍👍👍
Overall, a fantastic stay, but I do have a few suggestions to offer:
1. Only the door could be opened for ventilation in the room; the windows didn't open. It would be great if there was a way to allow for cross-ventilation.
2. The hotel doesn't provide parking vouchers. While overnight parking was only 20 yuan, offering vouchers would enhance the guest experience.
3. Perhaps due to concerns about some guests occupying a room with too many people, I was repeatedly asked during check-in how many individuals were staying in our room, which I found a bit off-putting."
